PORTER Postcard: Ischia

If the charms of Southern Italy are enticing but you crave a truly rejuvenating stay, this emerald jewel in the Bay of Naples should be your next destination, says EANNA MORRISON BARRS

Lifestyle
Sant’Angelo is one of Ischia’s prettiest seaside towns

Beyond the iconic cliffside villages of the Amalfi Coast and the glamorous island of Capri, Ischia is growing its reputation as one of Italy’s most authentic idylls. Less than an hour’s boat ride from Naples, it offers island-hoppers and mainland day-trippers an escape from the crowds – but its natural splendor and restorative, mineral-rich spas make it a destination well worth visiting in its own right, particularly for wellness travelers. In-the-know Italians have been coming for the healing properties of its volcanic hot springs and staying for the laid-back coastal charm for decades. This is not a playground for the jet-set to shop and be seen, but a discreet retreat where some of the world’s most famous celebrities have ignited illicit love affairs and celebrated ultra-private wedding ceremonies. If the promise of thermal renewal and paparazzi-less towns appeal to you too, this is where to stay, eat, shop and switch off…

The hilltop San Montano Resort & Spa is the perfect spot for sunset
San Montano Resort & Spa

The hotel

Located at the summit of Mount Vico, San Montano Resort & Spa boasts an impressive panorama of the Bay of Naples and the magnificent neighboring Mount Epomeo. Three hectares of lush garden encircle the resort, with umbrella pines and more than 400 lemon trees providing shade against the Mediterranean sun. This family-owned, 66-roomed establishment is warm and welcoming – the kind of place where guests return year after year, becoming intimately acquainted with the concierge.

The Infinity Pool Suites have private terraces and spectacular sea views, but the recently unveiled Lighthouse Suite occupies the resort’s most coveted, hilltop position. It’s a retreat within a retreat: three separate living areas, a private garden and a plunge pool. For culinary enthusiasts, there’s a fully equipped kitchen to use at your leisure, or you can engage a private chef to whip up a meal using fresh produce from the vegetable plot.

Spend your days dipping in and out of the resort’s 11 rejuvenating thermal pools, relaxing on sun loungers at the San Montano Bay beach club, finding sanctuary in the Ocean Blue Spa, or playing tennis on the clay courts, just a stone’s throw away in the town of Lacco Ameno. As aperitivo hour approaches, the Sunset Bar is the go-to for spritzes and small plates. What’s more, live music plays here every night, adding to the elegant atmosphere.

San Montano Resort’s pools each offer unique therapeutic properties, complemented by panoramic views across the island and sea

Carved into the rock, Lisola is one of Ischia’s buzziest dining destinations, with a large terrace and sweeping coastal views

The hot table in town

On the western edge of the island, carved directly into the rock, sits Lisola, a lively Mediterranean restaurant with stylish whitewashed interiors and sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The kitchen is helmed by renowned pizza chef Ivano Veccia and Nino Di Costanzo of the two-Michelin-starred Daní Maison, who showcase the best of southern Italy’s seasonal ingredients, from the catch of the day to rabbit ravioli and five-tomato spaghetti. The dishes are stellar across the board, but Lisola is really known for being the place for pizza. Choose from classic Neapolitan, fried and Roman-style slices with an inspired selection of traditional and signature toppings. To make the most of the restaurant’s gorgeous seafront vista, be sure to secure a table on the terrace, if you can. The golden glow and candy-colored skies of the sunset from this particular spot is not to be missed.

The dish

Italy’s Campania region is rich with culinary crowd-pleasers punctuated by beautiful sun-drenched ingredients and simple, robust flavors. Bruschetta al pomodoro and mozzarella di bufala might always be on the menu but ask any Ischia local and they’ll tell you the dish to savor on the island is rabbit stew. Served in a homecooked style with cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs, it’s an unlikely seaside specialty rooted in a long-standing tradition acquired from the mountain-dwelling populous.

The drink

With extremely fertile volcanic soil and an ideal climate for white grapes, the biancolella and forastera varieties grow in abundance. They’re found on steep, cliffside terraces – some so close to the edge that according to local lore, their roots reach the sea. Several award-winning wine producers continue ancient methods of viticulture, resulting in the salty freshness and rich minerality of Ischia Bianco – our drink of choice. Don’t miss the Michelin-starred Umberto a Mare’s wine cellar, beneath the Church of the Soccorso, for intimate, sommelier-guided tastings and expert pairings of over 1000 local, Italian and international labels.

The cultural excursion

There’s no better way to explore Ischia than by boat. Hire one of the hotel’s private yachts (equipped with a skipper and an ensuite) for an exclusive tour of the island’s idyllic harbors, secluded swimming spots and hidden coves. Make your first port of call the charming, car-free village of Sant’Angelo. It’s a must-see during your visit, with beautiful scenery, beach clubs, excellent boutiques and even better gelato. Plus, the nearby Le Fumarole beach is famous for geothermally heated sands, where you can enjoy the wellness benefits of natural heat therapy. Next, stop off at Ischia Ponte, where the Aragonese Castle commands attention against the sea and the sky on a rocky islet. At the top of this fortress, you’ll find verdant terraces, medieval cloisters and a picturesque outlook onto the pastel-hued facades below. Finally, dock at the Marina di Lacco Ameno, which plays host to La Festa di Santa Restituta in May. The town lights up in honor of its patron saint every year and showcases a dazzling display of fireworks come nightfall.

The historic clifftop Aragonese Castle is one of Ischia’s most iconic landmarks, while the village of Sant’Angelo is also not to be missed
The island’s signature maiolica tiles bring bursts of color and centuries of craftsmanship to its architecture

The shopping

As global luxury brands flock to Taormina and Capri, Ischia’s boutique owners are catering to vacation-goers by honoring the region’s artisanal traditions. You’ll still find Brunello Cucinelli, Saint Laurent and Gucci here, but they’re nestled between storefronts dedicated to handcrafted jewelry, custom-made sandals and a cornucopia of ceramics studios and art galleries. The market stalls in the bustling town of Forio sell straw baskets and vintage treasures, while specialty food stores off the Corso Francesco Regine invite you to take the flavors of the island home with you – provided there’s room in your carry-on.

The interiors inspiration

Embrace the highly ornamental art of the Mediterranean with brightly colored maiolica ceramics, which adorn Ischia’s historic church floors, restaurant tables and villa interiors. Hand-painted and decorated with swirling floral motifs or delightful depictions of lemons, fish and donkeys, this tin-glazed earthenware has its origins in the 15th century. Whether incorporated into a maximalist scheme or used to inject joy into more minimalist spaces, it will deliver character and vibrancy to your home by way of alfresco tablescapes, freshly laid bathroom tiles or kitchen backsplashes.
