Karen Elson’s AM/PM routine
Model and musician KAREN ELSON has just collaborated with Jo Malone London on a birthstone-inspired set of fragrance toppers. Here, the Nashville resident shares the beauty and wellness routine that she’s perfected over two decades in the fashion industry
IN THE MORNING
I get up around 6am…
…and once I drop my kids at school, I workout. I try to exercise every day when I’m at home, alternating Pilates, yoga and spin. I go to Marathon Pilates in Nashville where I live, but when I’m traveling to New York, I try to work out with Mary Helen Bowers of Ballet Beautiful.
I love breakfast…
…but I don’t like anything sweet. I always start with a cup of tea – it has to be a good, strong cup of British PG Tips. I usually have some avocado on toasted Ezekiel bread, which is made of sprouted grain, high in protein and so delicious.
I have to be really careful about products…
…as I’m fair and my skin is sensitive. I prefer a rich balm cleanser because my skin gets so dry and I love hyaluronic acid – it makes a real difference to my skin. When I’m in New York I always book an appointment with Dr David Colbert for ongoing skin maintenance.
Recently I found out…
…that I am deficient in vitamin D, which is hardly a surprise since I’m so pale. I try and get it from food first, but I’ve been having IV drips to top up and it’s been a complete game changer – my energy levels have changed dramatically.
Fragrances are my thing…
…but I don’t just wear one signature perfume; instead, I like to tailor my scent to match my mood, what the day has in store for me and my outfit. Today is a Jo Malone Wild Bluebell kind of day [Elson is wearing a lilac suit] and tonight may be an Incense and Cedrat or a Red Roses vibe.
IN THE EVENING
My stomach can be super-sensitive…
…particularly at the end of the day, so I’ve recently been taking charcoal or occasionally fennel. I’m a big tea drinker and tend to use teas medicinally, and a fennel tea really soothes my stomach.
When I have jet-lag…
I color my hair…
…to get a more intense shade of auburn (I’m naturally ginger), so I make sure I keep my hair hydrated and glossy. I’ll use either a little bit of coconut oil or a couple of drops of Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil – my hair is very fine so less is more.
I’m a big fan of baths…
…it’s my one indulgence, to set aside time to luxuriate in the tub. I like to add an oil and one of my go-tos is Jo Malone’s Red Roses – it’s heaven.
On my bedside table…
…is a ton of books, everything from self-help to biographies. I always have water and a cup of mint tea, a lip balm and a notebook for when I write music.
