Whether simple and chic, oversized or statement, a stylish cardigan is a knitwear staple – and the key to a great trans-seasonal wardrobe

From school uniforms to your grandmother’s closet, cardigans haven’t always had the chicest of associations. But, in recent seasons, this cozy button-up has become a fundamental part of our trans-seasonal wardrobes, thanks to its easy-wearing appeal and layering prowess. As we approach the new season, this humble knit takes on new-found relevance, offering versatility and low-maintenance practicality. Pop it into your tote for days on the go, or shrug it on over everything from midi dresses to tailored pants and painterly skirts.

For a playful, standout option, look to Stella McCartney, who teamed up with multi-disciplinary artist Ed Curtis to create this colorful patchwork cardigan – a true fashion collector’s piece. For something more traditional, The Great’s checked style has a vintage, homespun feel to it. Alternatively, look to Alexander McQueen’s zipped version, which lends a punkish spirit to a classic cable knit for a fashion-forward take, or Altuzarra’s sensual button-up number, which will work after dark, too. Wear your best cardigan over loose-cut pants with some box-fresh sneakers by day, or layer over midi dresses and barely-there sandals for an unexpected evening look.
