The Ultimate Makeup And Jewelry-Styling Masterclass
Makeup artist ROWI SINGH has gained a cult following for her maximalist makeup looks, which she likes to pair with fabulous fine jewels. Here, she shares her styling tips with CHARLIE BOYD
We all have parts of our personal style that we let take the lead each morning, when we’re deciding what to wear. For some, it’s an outfit that dictates their choice of jewelry and accessories; while others might consider their jewelry styling first, before selecting the clothes they are going to wear. For digital creator Rowi Singh, jewelry styling and makeup looks create one complete synergy, with maximalist makeup artistry paired with jewelry pieces that speak to her opulent, high-octane sense of style.
Singh hails from Sydney, and is inspired by her South Asian heritage, working with kaleidoscopic colors and face jewels to striking effect – in fact FKA Twigs was spotted wearing her line of stick-on gems earlier this year. Singh’s work has garnered her a cult following on TikTok and Instagram (along with a partnership with Fenty Beauty, among other brands), and she is admired for her diversity advocacy. Here, Singh gives us her tips for creative cohesion between jewelry styling and three of her signature makeup looks.
Pair pearls with elegant dot work
“Graphic dot work has an alluring effect. It frames your eyes, and it’s a super-simple way to dip your toes into an editorial-inspired makeup look. Here, I used Charlotte Tilbury’s Feline Flick Liquid Eyeliner – the liner tip is highly pigmented, yet very fluid. Press it to the skin and lightly twist the eyeliner to create your dots. I paired this with Pat McGrath Labs’ Skin Fetish: Divine Blush in Nude Venus for a subtle flush, and Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk lipstick for the perfect nude. This look is geared for pearls – they complement the dots to perfection. Try dainty pearl drops from Mizuki, double-strand drop earrings by Copenhagen-based designer Sophie Bille Brahe, or add a final accent to the top of the ear with a Diane Kordas pearl ear cuff.”
Mix metallic eyes with lustrous gold
“Eyes speak louder than words. This look is all about high-shine and layered metallic eyeshadow – midnight blue on the inner corner for a sultry pop, and a gold shade on the outer corner for a touch of regality. Olivia Palermo Beauty’s O’Naturel palette and Pat McGrath Labs’ Mothership VIII palette in Divine Rose are key products for this look. I’ve used Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk lipstick again on the lips, but this time with a touch of gloss. A metallic look needs high-shine jewels to create a sparkling theme; more is more here. Try Melissa Kaye’s single diamond earring, which has a clever cuff, layered with intricate yellow gold and diamond hoops by Buccellati, to elevate the look.”
Try tonal shading with contrasting colors
“For a full tonal moment, you should coordinate your eyes, lips and cheeks. Warm shades that complement deeper skin tones always do the trick for me. I went for a rouge-all-over look, using Pat McGrath Labs’ MTHRSHP Sublime in Rose Decadence on the eyes and the cheeks, topped off with Gucci Beauty’s Matte Lipstick in Janet Rust 505. In terms of jewelry styling, green jewels and accessories will add great color contrast. Accents of tourmaline on the ears will bring the warm tones to life – consider Bea Bongiasca’s Geri enamel earrings, and a neon enamel ear cuff by Yvonne Léon.”
