Everybody’s wearing colored leather

This week, editors, buyers and influencers alike flooded into Denmark, as the country’s best homegrown designers debuted their FW20 collections as part of Copenhagen fashion week. However, the game-changing looks weren’t limited to the runways. In fact, it was the attendees themselves who turned heads, as they raced between shows in a series of stylish outfits. While tastes varied wildly, there were a few special trends that seemed to capture the crowd. Chief among them? Colored leather.

Championed by everyone from local stylists Trine Kjær and Nnenna Echem to Dutch model Vera van Erp, butter-soft separates in shades of tan, taupe and olive felt like an utterly fresh proposition. A directional yet effortless addition to any outfit, a leather shirt or jacket can add an insouciant edge to everything from denim and tailoring to chunky knits and a classic tee. Sartorial extroverts can even take the look one step further by opting for head-to-toe leather. The key to mastering this needle-pushing look? Go for coordinating sets. Van Erp’s short suit is as elegant as it is effortless; if you’re mixing and matching, just be sure to keep your palette limited, sticking to subtle variations of the same shade.

It’s worth noting that this trend also extends to accessories, which means you can try it today by adding a suitably understated – and supple - handbag to your look. Many of Copenhagen’s finest were carrying Bottega Veneta’s pouch bags and totes, ranging from the teeny-tiny to the super-sized. Although, with cult labels including Frankie Shop, Peter Do and Andersson Bell getting in on the action, in all likelihood, it’s whittling your leather edit down that will prove the biggest challenge…
