5 Healthy-Hair Secrets This Celebrity Hairstylist Swears By

With this season’s hottest hair color a rich, golden blond (hello, Jennifer Lawrence), and super-shiny lengths a key look for FW23, it’s fair to say that lustrous, polished locks are trending. Commit to double shampooing

Over time, buildup from styling products, excess oils and pollutants can block your hair’s natural oils from getting to the hair shaft, which is when you’ll see dull, dry and flat hair as a result. “Use a purifying shampoo or a pre-shampoo product to eliminate any impurities on the scalp, such as oil and flakes, and on the hair itself, as this is a common area for buildup,” says Cannan. “And always, always do two shampoos.” Think of it like double cleansing your face: the first shampoo removes all the superficial debris on your hair, while the second will typically lather and clean more thoroughly.

Mix and match hair treatments

After being exposed to the harsh elements of summer (think sun, saltwater, chlorine and humidity), you can expect your hair to be even more in need of a moisture boost than normal. According to Cannan, adding moisture back into hair will not only rehydrate it, but will also help to reduce frizz. “One of my favorite tips is to create a custom-made treatment. Add a gloss or a toner (these can be clear or with a touch of color), plus a few drops of hair oil if your hair is particularly dry, to a revitalizing hair mask,” says Cannan. She advises using a lightweight mask formula that won’t weigh hair down, such as Sisley Hair Rituel Regenerating Hair Care Mask, so that you can apply it from root to tip. “Leave this on for 10-20 minutes – it will create a light film around each strand of hair that reflects the light, ultimately making your hair look shiny and glossy.”

Treat your hair from scalp to tip

Just as you would treat your whole face when applying moisturizer, you need to care for your whole head of hair, starting from your scalp, where healthy hair growth begins. “It’s key to approach haircare in the same way you care for your skin by using weekly hair masks to hydrate, nourish and regenerate both your hair and scalp,” says Cannan. Look for exfoliating formulas to clear blocked hair follicles on your scalp, as well as soothing and balancing treatments if you have any flakiness, itchiness or excessive hair loss.

Layer your styling products

“When styling your hair at home, use thin layers of any styling sprays or creams – and don’t forget heat protection,” advises Cannan. “It acts as a guard against heated appliances and stops your hair from drying out.” Just as important: “Use a bristle brush, as this creates a smoother finish and, for an added boost, I always use a few drops of hair oil to ends to amplify sheen.”

Add a simple embellishment

How you style your hair can make a difference to how healthy it looks overall. “Heading into FW23, [the trend] is longer, slicker, and blow-dried with more volume and a styled aesthetic,” says Cannan. “We’ll see side partings rather than those in the center – and something as simple as a change in parting can create a healthier hair effect. Simply tuck the parting side behind one ear to accentuate glossy coils or Hollywood waves. I also love thick ribbons or bows to dress up hair and give it a more refined, ‘cared-for’ appeal.”
