The Winter Coats You’ll Want To Wear All Season Long

From fashion-forward silhouettes and cool color palettes to luxe leathers and ultra-soft faux furs, the season’s best winter coats will leave you longing for a cold snap

Still looking for the best winter coat to add to your closet? This season, designers across the board have upped their game, presenting standout pieces that strike the perfect balance between timely and timeless.

Borrowed from the boys

A winter alternative to the boyfriend blazer, an overcoat in slightly enlarged proportions is a smart, sharp choice for every day. With nods to formal tailoring, such as double-breasted buttoning and pressed lapels, and crafted from heritage tweeds, these enduring silhouettes – proffered by The Row, Isabel Marant and Alexachung this season – will look polished paired with jeans and a T-shirt or add a masculine edge to slinky slip dresses for after-dark occasions.

The trench

A trench has long been a staple in the modern closet, but this season’s styles espouse a minimalist attitude, with quirky design notes that catapult it firmly into the contemporary zone. Gabriela Hearst’s sumptuous leather maxi trench with contrasting whipstitch detail tops our wish lists for FW21, while cult Korean brand Low Classic subverts the norm by adding a storm flap to the front of its vegan-leather iteration. Meanwhile, Co and Tibi craft their designs from sustainably sourced or recycled wools – polished and planet-friendly, they’re ideal for conscious shoppers.

The puffer

The puffer coat’s relevance shows no signs of slowing and, for FW21, it comes replete with directional details that move it firmly away from the off-duty realm. Alexander McQueen’s voluminous style features a cinch-waist toggle to create a dramatic silhouette that is at once retro yet futuristic, while Joseph’s cropped version is crafted from a chic charcoal flannel that would wear well with office-ready tailoring. For a sportier take, look to Holzweiler and Bottega Veneta, whose tracksuit-inspired neckline provides an added layer from the cold.

Blanket dressing

On colder days, nothing feels more cocooning than swathing yourself in blanket-style layers and, thankfully, designers have received the memo that cozy comfort is on the agenda for FW21. Fluid silhouettes reign supreme at Loro Piana and Saint Laurent – their pullover and zip-up capes are an ideal indoor-outdoor hybrid to layer over chunky knits. Two-in-one is the order of the day at Totême, which blends a billowing cape silhouette with a more structured overcoat for that sumptuous yet snug combo, while Tove’s built-in scarf will prove the ideal accessory you’ll never leave behind.

Natural textures are firmly in for fall, and nothing feels as tactile as a teddy-like, shearling coat – guaranteed to keep you snug on even the coolest days. With midi lengths and a trench-like silhouette, these elegant iterations will prove perfect for the party season; look to Yves Salomon, Chloé and Remain Birger Christensen for fuzzy overcoats that will look polished paired with evening gowns. For something a little more off-duty, Paris label Loulou Studio’s cropped, oversized jacket will look sleek partnered with wintery whites.
