How to upgrade your ponytail

Invest time in the pony prep…

It really does make a difference, says King: “You want the hair looking as healthy and shiny as possible, so take time on the blow-dry and use the smoothing nozzle of the dryer to smooth down the hair shaft.”

Don’t struggle with baby hairs…

Especially those around the hairline. “The trend right now with ponytails is sleek and polished, so use a little bit of finishing cream on a toothbrush and smooth in towards the crown of the head.”

The right hairbrush can make all the difference…

Always opt for a natural boar-bristle hair brush, advises King. “The bristles are identical to human hair, making it easier to detangle, and they naturally condition and add shine by distributing the scalp oils, leaving hair with a soft, smooth and polished finish.”

Keep the parting short…

“The sweet point is 6cm from the font, then start brushing back from there. A little volume on the crown is flattering on everyone – try adding a light layer of back-combing behind the parting to accentuate the volume, and keep the parted section tight behind the ears.”

Go low to elevate your look…

“Ultra-low keeps your ponytail looking modern, super-sophisticated and makes the neck appear more elegant. I recently did a super-low, sleek ponytail for the Ralph & Russo Couture show, which was the perfect elegant accent.”

Add height to flatter…

“Positioning is key – if you are attempting a high ponytail, then the hair should always follow the line of the cheekbones. Even more importantly, leave height on the top and keep it tight through the sides to make it modern.”

Up your accessory game…

From classic grosgrain to floppy velvet, the nostalgic ribbon or bow has become the hair accessory that can turn an everyday ponytail into something far more elegant and exciting.
