The Makeup Looks To Wear With… This Season’s Hot Pink Hues

Fuchsia, magenta, bubblegum: mood-boosting hot pink is fashion’s breakout shade of the season, gracing the catwalks of Valentino, Jacquemus and Balenciaga. But how best to pair your beauty look with such a bold sartorial hue? DANIELLE FOX discovers the three rules of this season’s new color-blocking trend

Color-block to compliment

Hot pink needs to be balanced with an equally strong look, and there is something incredibly striking about wearing red and pink together. For a sophisticated take, opt for a red lip with depth and a modern, velvet finish. If you have a cooler skin tone, stick with reds that have a blue or purple undertone. Conversely, if you have a warmer skin tone, like yellow, gold or olive, go for reds with similar tones, such an orange-red. Next, pair a bold lip with a simple yet impactful eye – a carbon-black mascara applied to top and bottom lashes works well.

Choose a contemporary finish

Pink can be a divisive makeup color – get it wrong and it can instantly age you (think overly coordinated palettes and frosty, shimmery finishes), but get it right and it can look fresh, modern and super-pretty. Go a shade darker than your outfit – and use a cheek and lip tint or balm, even on your eyes. Using fingers is key, as it won’t deposit the same density of color as using a brush, so you can afford to choose a bolder pink than you might otherwise think.

Opt for shades that mimic your skin tone

A summer lip doesn’t necessarily mean a bright statement – after all, nude lips with bronzed skin and eyes can look just as beautiful against a vibrant color palette. The trick is to look for a shade that mimics your skin tone; a nude lip should enhance rather than mask your complexion and leave you looking fresh rather than washed out. Those with a more yellow tone should choose a nude with a peachy tint, while those with a pink undertone should go for warm, rosy nudes.
