Jenny Tsang shares the secret formula behind her faultless style

Content creator and creative director JENNY TSANG is known for her effortless yet elegant personal esthetic – read on to discover the styling rules she swears by

Fashion
Tsang likes to include feminine and masculine elements in her closet, from long-line coats to cozy knits and timeless dresses and skirts

Have fall-back outfits

“My style is modern, minimal and all about balancing feminine and masculine elements. Oversized outerwear and blazers are my thing; I’ll throw one on over jeans most days – it’s my fall-back outfit. In the past few years I’ve become more aware of the importance of shopping sustainably. Now, before I make a purchase, I ask myself, how many times will I wear this piece? When it comes to dressing for summer in the city, silk slip dresses are my go-to – they look effortless when worn with a blazer and white sneakers. During winter, my fall-back look is an oversized blazer and A-line skirt, finished with chunky combat boots. My cold-weather closet is full of staples such as statement knits and long-line coats. I like minimal pieces in earthy tones but tend to opt for oversized fits to ensure they still have impact.”

Edit your essentials

“I’m really low-maintenance when it comes to hair and beauty, but I have a handful of products that I love and use every single day. I swear by Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, as I usually wear my hair down and it helps add volume and dimension. In terms of makeup, 95 percent of the time I go for a natural look. For me, that means Lilah B. Crème Foundation, Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Eyeshadow Palette in Pillow Talk (I always use brown on my eyes, even for eyeliner, to stop my look from being too harsh) and a coral lipstick. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a super-thin slick of neon eyeliner – it’s a whole new zone for me and it looks great with my Prada bucket hat.”

Have a point of view

“I love strong women with singular vision. I am a huge fan of Victoria Beckham; her collections have got better and better, and I love how her look is feminine, clean and sharp – it’s so timeless. Gabriela Hearst is another designer with impeccable taste – her take on tailoring is incredible. If you’re looking for an outfit to wear to one of this year’s more intimate weddings, a suit is a great alternative to a traditional floral dress. Don’t be afraid to do your own thing.”

Find your inspiration

“I was born in Hong Kong, so it’s always felt like home to me, but I grew up in California and now I’m based between the two – although I haven’t been able to travel to China for months due to current restrictions. Los Angeles and Hong Kong are like totally different worlds. Obviously, the weather in LA is incredible. That’s one of the things I love about LA style – it basically always feels like summer, so there are loads of opportunities to wear summer dresses, bright colors and lighter fabrics. Since flying has been prohibited, my boyfriend and I spent the summer going on amazing coastal road trips, which is part of the beauty of living in California. Hong Kong is very different – it’s about modern luxury, elegance and diversity; I get so much wardrobe inspiration from people-watching when I’m there.”

Tsang has recently been inspired to wear tailored pieces, such as pleated pants, in the comfort of her own home

Embrace change

“During the first few months of the pandemic, my home was the only place I was able to capture content. Rather than restricting me, it actually inspired me to mix pieces I would usually only wear out with more laid-back styles: for example, tailored pleated pants with crewneck sweatshirts or button-down shirts with sweatpants. I’ve found that this hi/lo styling has really resonated with my audience, because it’s relatable yet still inspiring. However, creating videos for TikTok and Instagram Reels also gave me an extra opportunity to dress up at home on a daily basis!”
