A must-have mesh top

With cutouts and gossamer fabrics adding a daring sensuality to looks on the runways, it’s no surprise that second-skin, semi-sheer mesh tops are taking over our Instagram feeds right now (see Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish for outfit inspo). For a haute twist on this grunge-adjacent trend, seek out printed styles with an artistic feel. Loewe’s lightweight tulle version is decorated with a body print that includes hands with scarlet-lacquered nails that frame the waist, while Monse’s patchwork version is inspired by peeling wheatpaste posters in Paris, giving it a vintage, collaged effect. Pair them with leather pants for a punk-inspired aesthetic.

Y2K denim bags

Giving us pure ’00s nostalgia in miniature form is the denim handbag. Balenciaga’s printed version of its ‘Le Cagole XS’ is like a little slice of fashion history, inspired by the brand’s classic City line, which comprised the It-bags of the era. However, with Bottega Veneta also embracing the revival by resurrecting its coveted ‘Cassette’ bag in a light-wash denim, there are styles for minimalists and maximalists alike. Wear yours with an oversized logo tee and wide-leg jeans for a modern spin on the original look.

Cargo pants

If further evidence were needed that ’90s silhouettes are back, consider the return of the cargo pant final confirmation. This relaxed, pavement-grazing pair from Amiri is more neatly tailored than its ’90s predecessor for a grown-up take on skater style. Meanwhile, street-style favorite Frankie Shop’s beige pair has an ultra-flattering fit that sits high on the waist. Style with a tank top and crisp shirting for a polished take on off-duty style.

A retro knit

Knitwear is often filed under functional, but these playful, brightly colored versions are here to prove otherwise. Sindiso Khumalo’s pink-and-red floral cardigan nails the look of love’ trend that dominated the FW22 runways. Meanwhile, Alessandra Rich quite literally puts a cherry on top of our new-season look with her cute mohair-blend sweater – its cropped silhouette is perfect for wearing with high-waisted pants.

Cowboy boots

Boot season is upon us and, courtesy of agenda-setting designers like Gabriela Hearst at Chloé, western styles are making a comeback. Ganni is also getting behind this look in a big way, presenting knee-high styles in its SS23 Joy Ride collection. Wear this tan-colored version from the Danish brand with jeans tucked in now, then style them with swishy dresses come next season. Alternatively, Paris Texas’s sleek black pair makes an equally sound investment.

Ultra-violets

With an intense purple called ‘Very Peri’ leading as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022, it comes as no surprise that a kaleidoscope of lilacs and lavenders has saturated the runways. Case in point: Vince’s bold amethyst sweater will add a vibrant pop of color to your fall workwear and pairs perfectly with chocolate-colored tailoring. After hours, try slipping into Bottega Veneta’s metallic mules in pastel purple.

Ballet flats

There are few shoes chicer than a ballet flat. With slip-on-and-go ease, they add instant polish to dresses and denim alike. The Row’s black satin style, with a neat square-toed silhouette, is a particularly sophisticated choice, while Maison Margiela’s split-toe ‘Tabi’ style will add a directional feel to any look.

Flight jackets

New-gen flight jackets come in unconventional cuts and colorways this season. For a classic with a twist, always look to Sacai – the Japanese label excels in adding a touch of the unexpected, and its flight jacket comes with an inverted pleat to lend fluidity to the silhouette. Meanwhile, Remain Birger Christensen simultaneously taps into the Barbiecore trend with its playful pink leather version.

Off-duty staples

Yeezy Gap Engineered By Balenciaga’s haute hoodies and T-shirts are the epitome of off-duty cool and lend casual pieces a high-fashion feel. Made from a softly padded cotton-jersey in a cropped silhouette, this hoodie is sure to become a go-to in your closet. The T-shirts, meanwhile, are ideal for throwing on with track pants for laid-back brunches.

Colorful stones

Juicy, colorful jewels can instantly elevate your outfit, not to mention your mood. For Fabergé’s Emotion collection, the house’s iconic egg has been decorated with rubies, emeralds, tsavorites and sapphires, and dangled from a diamond-encrusted loop on an 18-karat-gold bracelet; it’s the perfect finishing touch for eveningwear in need of a pop of color. For plunging necklines or bold tailoring, look to Rainbow K’s multi-stone ‘Cleopatra’ necklace, which will add playfulness and polish in equal measure.
