The 9 Feel-Good Rituals Beauty Experts Swear By

It’s often the small bursts of happiness we get from acts of self-care that make the biggest difference to our wellbeing. Here, MALENA HARBERS discovers what gives these A-list beauty pros and insiders unwavering joy

Beauty

Miranda Kerr, founder and CEO of Kora Organics, on the importance of sleep

“Something that always makes me feel good is sleep. I try to get at least seven hours every night. When I have a good night’s sleep, I feel so much better. I recently got an Ōura Ring, which tracks my sleep, plus my steps during the day, and seeing the analytics has really helped motivate me to get to bed a little earlier; I truly believe health is wealth.”

Charlotte Mensah, hairstylist and founder of Charlotte Mensah haircare, on her cold-shower habit

“One thing I never miss is taking a shower in the morning. It’s the only way I can start my day – with a clear mind and feeling fresh enough to tackle anything. I always put a couple of drops of Aromatherapy Associates’ Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil into my soap mix. It wakes me up and smells great. Hot showers are nice, but I also love the benefits of a refreshing cold rinse. A cold shower – even a short one – improves circulation throughout the body, which energizes me and makes me alert for a full-on day on my feet. I’ll always start with a regular warm shower and slowly lower the temperature over the course of several minutes. The goal is to always go full-freezing – even [if it’s] just a minute or two of cold at the end. It’s not easy, but I always feel better for it.”

Charlotte Tilbury, makeup artist and founder of Charlotte Tilbury beauty, on concocting the perfect pre-bed bath

“When I want to get a good night’s sleep, I add an entire bag of Epsom salts with magnesium to my bath and then surround myself with candles (favorites include Diptyque’s Green Figuier and Roses) and my crystal bowls. I have crystals that I have collected over the years, and I find them healing – I play my crystal bowl sound bath.”

Victoria Beckham, designer, on her healing supplement regimen

“I take a lot of supplements. I really like Danish brand Puori. I add its CP1 Pure Collagen Peptides powder to coffee or water – and I also take fish oils, magnesium and vitamin C with zinc. Puori also does these great packs of vitamins that contain everything you need each day. I also take vitamins for hair and nails, and Basis NAD+ by Elysium Health, plus I drink Skinade, which is really good.”

Angela Caglia, aesthetician and founder of Angela Caglia skincare, on her self-care Sunday

“I start this weekly treat with a magnesium bath taken early in the evening as a way of prepping for the week ahead. I love making up a face mask, using fresh honey from central California, Greek yogurt, avocado and mashed-up strawberries. It’s the ritual of making it that feels like such a treat, and the results are fabulous, too. I love to do a face massage or use a face roller over a cream or oil – always working upwards and outwards. If I’m stressed, I work more firmly over the brows and temples – it’s a really relaxing little ritual. I also use my Angela Caglia Vibrating Rose Quartz Face Sculpting Roller, as it helps the skincare penetrate better.”

Gucci Westman, makeup artist and founder of Westman Atelier, on the power of salon-worthy hair

“I always feel best when I’m eating clean and exercising regularly, but the real feel-good factor for me has always been a great blowout. It just truly makes me so happy! When I can’t see the lovely stylists at David Mallett in New York, I’ll treat my hair to his Mask No. 1 for a hydration boost, and then I’ll rub a bit of the Hair Serum through my ends for a natural, silky shine. Faking a bronze glow with makeup always perks me up, too. No matter the season, sweeping a touch of my Westman Atelier Super Loaded Tinted Highlight in Peau de Soleil over my cheekbones and eyelids instantly brightens up my mood.”

Tata Harper, founder of Tata Harper skincare, on enjoying the ultimate bath

“Taking a bath always makes me feel great. Bath time is sacred to me and is often the only chance I have on a busy day to properly unwind. Lately, I’ve been doing a ‘love bath’ ritual, which is a whole process. I start by smudging the room with sage while the tub fills up, then I add some relaxing bath salts. I love to have a candle burning while I take a bath – it helps me enter into a deeply relaxed state. I’ll then add one or two peonies to the water, which symbolize love, and red rose petals. I’m also a big fan of crystals and have gotten into crystal healing, so I like to add rose quartz, malachite, pink opal and chrysocolla, both in the water and around the tub, so that I’m fully immersed in calming and loving energy while I’m bathing. Finally, I enter the water and close my eyes, taking a moment to express gratitude for this time.”

Dr Maryam Zamani, oculoplastic surgeon and founder of MZ Skin, on her love of exercise

“I love exercising – you could say it’s a hobby. I train every day, whether it’s weight training, Pilates or cardio. If I can combine this with beautiful ocean views, I’m in my element. I love to go hiking when I’m abroad, or I’ll find a hiking retreat in the European hills. I often spend summers in Saint-Tropez and I take full advantage of having time to myself by getting out in nature to absorb gorgeous surroundings. Fresh air, sunshine and the sparkling sea are truly my simple pleasures. Our skin reflects physical and emotional health and is greatly influenced by lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise, stress management and sleep, so time spent in open spaces makes me happy, inside and out.”

Newby Hands, luxury beauty brand consultant, on her secret to perfect sleep

“I’ve always loved a long, hot bath, but a few years ago I made it part of a proactive approach to better sleep, and it has really worked. Now, just prepping my bath helps me mentally unwind, as it has become a very simple but also quite powerful ritual. Rather like how you train a baby to get to sleep, I started to have the same routine every single night: I run a hot bath (which, if followed by being in a cool bedroom, is known to help the body prepare for sleep), I add magnesium flakes and a bath and shower oil and I listen to my Audible app – there’s nothing more soothing than being read to. Doing this same routine has transformed my sleep pattern, and now, within 10 minutes of getting out of the bath, I’m asleep – I can even track it on my Fitbit!”
