Few pieces of clothing can claim to have the same enduring appeal as a great pair of leather pants. Of course, there are closet staples, such as a pair or blue jeans or a blazer, that every woman ought to have in her arsenal, but leather pants somehow feel both essential and exciting. They were a core part of the greaser uniform in the 1950s before being co-opted by rock ’n’ roll and punk royalty in the ’70s and ’80s. Fast-forward to 2022 and they’re as relevant as ever – a testament to their transcendence and timeless design.

In recent seasons, designers have been moving away from more body-conscious cuts in favor of straight and wide-leg styles with an inherent sense of ease. Crucially, these updated leather pants are also even easier to style than their predecessors. Take your cues from tastemaker Camille Charrière and pair your wide-leg leather pants with a second-skin knit and mini bag for a modern take on elegant dressing.

It’s also worth noting that, while black is still the de facto shade when it comes to leather pants, increasingly, more designers are playing with neutral tones, too. Isabel Marant, the Parisian queen of cool, has revamped her classic high-waisted, tapered-leg silhouette in a supple white leather this season. Style them with a simple black blouse and strappy sandals for an effortless desk-to-dinner look. Meanwhile, Petar Petrov’s low-rise, light-brown leathers have a utilitarian feel to them and are perfect for pairing with a classic trench coat and some chunky gold jewelry.

Elsewhere, pioneering labels have been flying the flag for vegan leather. Cue Amsterdam-based Caes, which is quickly becoming a cult favorite among fashion insiders for elegant designs made from considered materials – its straight-leg, faux-leather pants are sure to become a go-to in your closet for the office, date nights and more. Meanwhile, MCQ’s faux-leather iteration features a lightly crinkled effect and tailored finish – pair with a crisp white shirt, tailored blazer and penny loafers for meetings, or a silk top and pointed slingbacks for after dark.

Of course, if your style skews towards a more directional aesthetic, opting for a double-leather look guarantees maximum sartorial impact with minimal effort – as evidenced by model friends Amar Akway and Ashley Radjarame, who were spotted outside the SS22 Alaïa show in coordinating leather outfits. Both women opted for loose-fitting jackets and straight-leg pants; the oversized proportions an essential styling trick to ensure their final looks were suitably nonchalant. After all, the perennial allure of leather pants is down, in no small part, to the air of rebellion they bring.
