Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Moisturizer? This Singer-Songwriter Believes There Is…
From her biggest beauty faux pas to why actor Matthew McConaughey is her secret to a good night’s sleep, British-Jamaican artist MAHALIA shares her beauty and wellness secrets
I used to over-moisturize because I love trying out new products
As a young Black girl, I remember my mum always saying, “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.” But, it was a facialist who recently recommended I pull back on moisturizing – and my skin has never looked better. Instead, I keep it simple now, and use four products in the morning: a cleanser, vitamin-C serum, a hydrating serum and a gel-free SPF50.
I’ve tried to work out my hair type a million times…
…but every time I look at different textures, it doesn’t really fit. My hair is more Afro than European, but it’s not as curly as my mom’s and then there are some days it might look much more like my dad’s when I brush it out. It also depends massively on the weather and conditions – with curly and Afro hair, it’s not quite as simple as saying, “This is the texture; this is the type.”
My go-to natural hair product is…
…KeraCare High Sheen Glossifier, which I always use before I blow-dry. One, it protects it, but two, it just gives it a natural shine. I don’t use any real heat on my hair, but sometimes I’ll blow-dry it on a really low heat if I’m going to put it in a bun. If I’m doing a twist out, I’ll use a curling custard, too.
My favorite hairstyle to date is…
…probably when I did blonde faux locks. When I first got them, they were a bit too tight and my hair was pulling; I couldn’t sleep for two days! In the end I went back and got them loosened. Once they were sorted and I could enjoy them, I just thought they were the best thing ever.
My best tip for jet lag is melatonin
The worst jet lag I ever feel is going to Los Angeles – for some reason it’s just really bad. So, I always grab a little pot of melatonin tablets, and that really helps me. A bath with Epsom salts is always good, too, but I don’t know if there’s a real trick for getting over it. I kind of think you have to ride the wave.
My workout of choice is rowing
When I’m getting ready for an event…
…I usually start with my hair, because it’s always quite stressful. If I have my natural hair out, I love a slicked bun because it’s easy to do and it’s quick. I do my makeup myself and it takes me about an hour – I can’t live without the Fenty Beauty lip gloss, which adds the perfect sparkle and a little bit of color.
I’ve been working with my hairstylist Rio since I was 14…
…and he’s just brilliant. He’s been in my life for such a long time now and is like one of my best friends or a big brother. He’s really helped shape the way I look after my hair and [enabled] me to let it grow. Because of the texture of my hair, it breaks off easily, which is why we do a lot of these different looks – some wigs, some weaves – to ensure that my hair is getting enough protection.
Matthew McConaughey has helped hugely with my sleep
What keeps me up at night? Life!
I think about everything in bed. The thing about doing what I do is that we like to say it’s not a job because we love it, and I absolutely do love it – but it’s still a job.
Three things on my bedside table right now are…
