Fall/winter 2020’s most covetable pieces
There’s nothing quite like a new season to inspire a sartorial shift. Whether you’re building the perfect capsule closet or on the hunt for mood-enhancing accessories, the new-season collections are awash with wish-list-worthy pieces that promise to elevate any look. Struggling with the selection process? Let the NET-A-PORTER team advise…

“Isabel Marant has done it again. This season, as ever, the cult designer has taken a classic piece and given it a Parisian twist. I love everything about her take on the pant suit, from the ’80s-inspired oversized shoulder pads to the masculine-style pants. As soon as I saw this piece on the runway back in March, it jumped straight to the top of my FW20 wish list. I’ll be styling mine with a white T-shirt and a pair of sneakers for that effortless French-girl look.”
Elizabeth von der Goltz, global buying director
“If the past few months have taught me anything about fashion, it’s that style goes far beyond the clothes you put on your back or the accessories you choose to pair with them. Fashion has a way of fortifying us and bringing us joy, even on the most challenging of days. It’s really confirmed my belief that there’s no point in saving special pieces for occasions that might not come around; and that extends to even the most precious pieces of jewelry. Diamonds are a symbol of love and often remind us of the most heart-warming memories – so why keep those pieces locked away? This season I’ll be adorning my most luxurious and laid-back looks with my favorite diamond-studded necklaces, rings and earrings.”
Sarah Bailey, brand director
“What could be a more powerful symbol of the connectivity and togetherness that we all crave right now than an interlocking chain? Without doubt, 2020 has been the year of the chain; from the big, bold embellishments that featured in Bottega Veneta’s RTW collection, to the humble neck chain sported by Normal People’s Connell Waldron. Whether it’s the zeitgeist speaking or not, it just feels good to wear a chain necklace now. Go for a more-is-more styling approach by stacking two or three; alternatively, opt for a single statement piece, such as Lauren Rubinski’s two-toned beauty… Which has just slipped into my wish list!”

“I’m not the biggest fan of winter, but having spent an embarrassing amount of lockdown wearing slippers and living in sandals all summer long, I’m ready to get to grips with some proper footwear once again. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of knee-high boots for a few seasons now, but just couldn’t seem to find the right style – until I discovered Isabel Marant’s caramel designs. Classic in terms of color and cut, but finished with decidedly contemporary details, such as the cone-shaped heel, these head-turning boots would make an effortless addition to my closet. I’ll be styling them with everything from knitted dresses and mini skirts to blue jeans and – taking my cues from the runway – wide-leg culottes.”
Alice Casely-Hayford, content director
“I haven’t actually worn a watch since my early teens – admittedly, that was something garish and chunky – and it’s high time I invested in a forever piece. It’s so easy just to glance at my phone to check the time, but there’s something incredibly special about a beautifully crafted timepiece to treasure – an elegant wristwatch that completes any outfit. I don’t wear much jewelry, so a chic rose-gold watch is the perfect adornment and finishing touch, whether it’s peeking out from beneath a blazer sleeve or adding a subtle glint of glamour to an LBD. My father was a watch collector and my brother is now building his own collection, so I’d love to get involved in the family tradition and treat myself to my very own timepiece.”

“Given the ‘new normal’ that this winter will bring upon us, I am looking for pieces with versatility, and the knit dress offers exactly that. Fashion-forward but functional, and most importantly comfortable, it can be styled in multiple ways: with sheer tights and a knee-high boot for an easy daytime look, or modern pumps for a sultry evening switch-up. The cut-out details on Victoria Beckham’s stunning design gives this fail-safe piece an extra talking point and that subtly sexy appeal we saw coming through in so many of the fall collections.”
Kay Barron, fashion director
“I’m always on the search for the perfect knit. One that envelops, but never overwhelms. One that is oversized, but never too big. One that practically welcomes winter, but saves you from having to hit the heavy coats just yet. An oversized knit with jeans and boots is my October-to-November go-to, and one thing that makes the chill in the air almost worth it.”
Marquessa Lucas-Box, junior fashion editor
“This season, as ever, investing in a gorgeous blazer is a no-brainer. Whether you go for a classic finish or statement print, a perfectly fitted blazer is a trend-resistant purchase fit for any occasion; not many pieces can handle a full day’s work followed by dinner and drinks with friends. This endlessly flattering closet staple can be thrown over any outfit to give it instant polish, which is why it’s top of my wish list this season.”
Kristen Neillie, senior fashion assistant
“A classic shearling coat has long been a winter-wardrobe staple. Cozy yet chic, it’s an effortless way to put a stylish spin on your cold-weather closet. Personally, I love to wear mine oversized and find myself adding a new version to my wardrobe every season. Toughen it up with chunky flat boots or take it out for dinner with an elevated heel.”
Annie Hertikova, fashion assistant
“Being a self-confessed accessory addict, ‘You can never have too many bags’ is a motto I live by. A slouchy clutch is at the top of my wish list this season, and Bottega Veneta is the label I’m lusting after. Daniel Lee has reinvented the Italian house’s signature woven-leather bags with interesting shapes and oversized proportions, striking the perfect balance between modern yet timeless. Investing in one of his creations is easy – the most difficult part is choosing which one.”
Sabina Khan, fashion assistant
“It’s no secret that Bottega Veneta is knocking it out of the park with its accessory game at the moment. Just when you thought you had already seen its most-covetable pieces, enter FW20’s new rubber-trimmed Chelsea boot. The exaggerated proportions and transparent sole give them a unique edge, yet they are understated enough to appeal to even the most minimal dresser. With the weather in London deteriorating by the day, a tough ankle boot is just what I need for those cold and rainy fall days. They can toughen up a knit dress and trench, while off-duty days call for straight-leg jeans, a plain T-shirt and a cozy oversized knit or hoodie.”
