Strong lashes were the focus backstage at the Dior SS18 show

‘Backcombing’ is the surprising new technique for creating thick-looking lashes. Based on the same theory of creating hair volume by reverse-brushing the roots, it might sound scary, but it’s actually very simple and extremely effective. CHANELLE HO reveals how to do it

YOUR HOW-TO GUIDE

Curl

Curling is a key first step, but it’s essential to ensure your eyelash curler has gently rounded silicon pads – square-edged ones damage lashes, causing them to break over time. Hold the curlers at the base of the lashes and press for 10 seconds, then repeat in the middle of the lashes for a smoother, natural-looking curl.

Backcomb

“Load your mascara onto a flat eyeliner brush – I always use NARS’ Push Eyeliner Brush,” says makeup artist Andrew Gallimore. “Gently lifting the upper eyelid, push the product both into and between the roots – this fills in the gaps, giving intensive color and thickness.”

Alternatively, use the tip of a skinny mascara wand to pack the product into the roots. Finish with a sweep of mascara through lashes as normal and you’ll end up with thick, fluffy, velvety lashes.

Nourish

If you wear mascara every day, we can guarantee your lashes will need extra hydration and conditioning. Daily use of mascara and tugging at lashes to remove eye makeup weakens them, making them brittle and dehydrated. Use a lash oil or serum nightly to nurse them back to health.
