A curated roundup of the best new fashion arrivals, hand-picked by our editors
With the arrival of longer days, lighter mornings and sunnier skies in London comes an air of positivity that sees the PORTER fashion team naturally gravitating towards more lightweight wardrobe pieces; welcome palate-cleansers from the sturdier knits we’ve all relied on for months. And fewer garments encapsulate that jovial mood quite like a white poplin dress.
Case in point: Molly Goddard’s crisp cotton midi. Since launching her label in 2014, Goddard has become a darling of the London Fashion Week schedule, embodying that sense of modern creativity that British designers have become known for. Her playful dresses – forever replete with frills and flounces, and often rendered in technicolor – are anything but traditional; in fact this white dress is kept firmly in the urban sphere thanks to its contemporary silhouette and squared-off neckline.
That’s why it caught the eye of senior fashion features editor Gillian Brett this season. “I have a diary full of events coming up, and this dress is an ideal addition to my wardrobe as it’s understated enough to wear on repeat, but the interesting silhouette still commands attention,” she says. “I love that I can dress it up with accessories and wear it to birthday parties, but equally will be able to style it with a pair of fisherman flats on days when I’m rushing to the office – it’s very much a throw-on-and-go style.”
For night-time, Brett suggests pairing it with a buttery leather bag, barely-there sandals by Neous and gold-tone jewelry that, she says, will “bring an after-dark attitude”. Alternatively, amp up the tactility by grabbing JW Anderson’s crocheted bag – the perfect mix of cool and crafty. With its summer-ready striped colorway, it’s an ideal pairing for Roksanda’s fluoro-green knit, or Wales Bonner’s slouchy jacquard trousers, and Burberry’s beige bucket hat will perfectly signal that relaxed, new-season mood, no matter where you’re heading.
