14 of the world’s best beach clubs

Purobeach Illetas Beach Club, Mallorca

From picturesque private sands to golden-hour dining, the best beach clubs are the perfect places to eat, relax and watch the sun go down

PUROBEACH Illetas and Palma, Mallorca

Ibiza may be the party island, but for beautiful beaches and chic bars, Mallorca should be the Balearic hotspot on your radar. And there’s no better way to unwind here than at one of the Purobeach group’s two exclusive beach bars. The newer of the two, Purobeach Illetas, sits on a cliff edge on the southwest side of the island with a private beach and views over the crystal-clear waters of Palma. After a night out (Mallorca has its fair share of nightclubs, too), there’s nothing more refreshing than one of its yoga classes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, followed by a detox massage at the well-appointed spa. Purobeach Palma, meanwhile, boasts a dramatic lava stone pool and a newly opened rooftop terrace. After being greeted with a welcome tray – fresh fruit, smoothies, mineral water and aftersun – take to one of the decadent Balinese beds for the perfect sunset spot. Once you’ve watched day turn to night with the rest of the island’s beautiful people, head to sister site Purohotel in the heart of Palma’s old town for modern, boutique-style luxury in a 17th-century palace.

If your greatest desire is to get away from it all and laze on a billowing silk daybed by the finest sugary sands on a private 400m beach, then Maxx Royal, an all-inclusive resort on the Anatolian coastline, can’t be beaten. This is one big, glossy paradise: star-chef menus; champagne-soaked pool parties; all-white sunbeds; and spas where you can recover from indulging at one (or more) of the six different restaurants, ranging from a Belgian slow cooking concept to a Japanese sashimi counter, not to mention their own chocolatier. With its clubhouse vibe, Tangerine Beach is the most glamorous place to hang out, where you can feast on barbequed seafood skewers on long driftwood tables as the sun sets. The pace is slow but the service impeccable, as wait staff whizz by on roller skates. After dark, the party moves round the bay to the resort’s secret beach bar, Black Diamond: it's a slick lounge carved into the rocks that hosts hedonistic, dancing-under-the-stars nights.

Blue Apple Beach House comprises an all-day club, bar, restaurant and a boutique five-room hotel

Inspired by the old-world glamour of the Saint-Tropez summer beach club scene, Blue Apple Beach House is a seductive and languid retreat on a deserted island on the southern shore of Tierra Bomba island, 30 minutes from Cartagena. It draws a stylish crowd with plenty of Provençal rosé and long driftwood tables draped with immaculate white linen, where you can order simple yet sophisticated classics with a twist – think house seabass and coconut rice or blue cheese mussels – to a soundtrack of tropical soul. Overlooking the white sands of Playa Mamon, this beach club was a fantasy fulfilled and labor of love for its English owner. For the rest of us, it’s a place to linger and spend sultry evenings under the stars at this all-day club, bar, restaurant and sensational 10-bedroom hotel, complete with its own stunning diving site.

UXUA CASA Trancoso, Brazil

Trancoso is an exotic haven, where billionaires rub shoulders with fishermen over a Caipirinha, indistinguishable in uniform shorts and Havaianas. Romantic, sexy and very laid-back, Uxua’s beach hangout is the place to chill. Head to the thatch-roofed bar housed within an old fishing boat on Coconut Tree Beach, where the owner has restored more abandoned fishing crafts, transforming them into plush day beds, on which to savor the freshest ceviche. Don’t miss the new private villas at this heavenly retreat, which are available to book for the first time through Uxua Casa Hotel. Our favorite, Casa Anderson, the largest property which sleeps eight, celebrates all things native, with Brazilian antiques, local crafts and Pataxó Indian art. A stay here also comes with daily yoga and capoeira lessons on the hotel’s legendary stretch of silky white sand beach.

With swimming pools, a spa, Michelin-starred restaurant and exclusive beach club, Palazzo Avino is pure Amalfi luxury

PALAZZO AVINO Amalfi Coast, Italy

Romantic hideaway Palazzo Avino is the only hotel in the artistic cliff-top town of Ravello that can lay claim to its own beach club. A complimentary shuttle winds down between the hotel and the aptly named Clubhouse by the Sea every hour or so, in 10 or 15 minutes. However, the most memorable way to reach it is to walk from the hotel’s front door, zig-zagging past ancient churches and through quiet, cat-filled squares, winding down ever-steeper cobbled steps to the glittering water below. The Clubhouse itself – a walled private villa – has various cantilevered platforms studded with white umbrellas alongside a flower-edged plunge pool. Another terrace is given over to the restaurant with stunning views over the dramatic Amalfi coastline to the towns of Maiori and Vietri. There’s a wood-burning oven for pizzas and simple fish dishes of the day, but otherwise, it’s as simple a beachside haven as you could wish for: no DJs, no special effects, no motorized beach toys; just two ladders to send you plunging into the deep-blue Tyrrhenian Sea.

Hotel Tresanton brings a slice of Mediterranean style to the Cornish coast

This new beach club is a brilliant use of space opposite the legendary Hotel Tresanton’s restaurant and al fresco dining terraces. Above the rocky coastline, a series of three terraces support shaded daybeds and a bar serving light lunches – think plates of oysters, burgers and bowls of homemade ice cream – while further down, almost on sea level, are high perches and tables for cocktails overlooking St Anthony’s Lighthouse. Exotic with its palms trees and cheerful stripy sun umbrellas, the beach club immediately puts you in the vacation mood. A small gate will take you down to the shoreline from which you can swim, explore rock pools on neighboring Tavern Beach, or tender out to the hotel’s beautiful yacht, Pinuccia – a 1930s Italian racing classic available for daytime charter.

AM to PM
Chill out all day on the private beach then party all night at Santa Marina’s Buddha-Bar

SANTA MARINA Mykonos, Greece

Set on the only privately owned beach on Mykonos, Santa Marina’s iconic Buddha-Bar Beach restaurant is the island’s coolest coastline spot. Lunch against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea, lie under half-dome cabana beds on the wooden deck, then head back up to the bar after sunset to dance to world-renowned DJs spinning Balearic beats. Just be sure to ask the concierge to arrange your helicopter home.

Find relaxation and adventure in equal measure at The Peligoni Club

THE PELIGONI CLUB Zakynthos, Greece

The ultimate bells-and-whistles spot, The Peligoni Club has private access to a stretch of deep clear water and every kind of water activity imaginable, from paddleboarding and catamaran sailing to windsurfing, wakeboarding and canoeing. Friendly tutors are on hand to help beginners, and the place is run with sunny enthusiasm and relaxed bonhomie. There isn’t a beach per se, but daybeds and umbrellas are ramped up across the rocky shoreline, with plenty of quiet corners with backgammon and chess boards to hand, and private tables for parties large and small. As well as an outdoor gym and swimming pool, there are complimentary yoga and pilates sessions on the decks overlooking the sea, kids’ clubs for under 12s, and regular party nights for teens or their parents with barbecues and happy hours, all offered in the best possible, if laid-back, taste and style.

Chambao sits on the white sands of Ibiza’s beautiful Talamanca beach

CHAMBAO Talamanca, Ibiza

Part of Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, the White Isle’s most exciting five-star opening of late, the blissful Chambao epitomizes the Nobu group’s barefoot-luxury vibe. Just steps from the Cala Talamanca shoreline, it offers laid-back chiringuito (Spanish beach bar) dining with a refreshingly uncomplicated menu of just-caught seafood and Balearic specialities. Join the hotel’s clientele in the lounge afterwards for a more sophisticated sundowner.

Jet-setters and celebrities alike love the open-air party vibe of Island

Island is the ultimate insider’s secret on the Athenian Riviera, boasting an all-white nightclub, a private beach, a Mediterranean/Japanese fusion restaurant and concept store. But the real attraction here is the secluded villa with zen-style pool, which makes a decadent destination for a work event or a romantic wedding reception venue for up to 400 people.

In a city where size matters, the Dubai outpost of the world-famous Nikki Beach – situated on the Pearl Jumeira island – is a bijou resort offering among giants. The circular pool is its centerpiece, surrounded by sleek wooden furniture and elegant palm trees, resulting in a boutique-style oasis to escape the flash and frenzy of the nearby metropolis. Saturday brunch here draws a friendly, unpretentious crowd.

The hotel’s incredible indoor and outdoor swimming pools and thalassotherapy spa are also not to be missed.

Style and substance reign in equal measure, with beautifully modern design married with traditional Aegean-inspired interiors. Private bungalows, an aquapark, four swimming pools, and an open-air Pilates and yoga studio are among its plethora of on-site amenities.
