Ganni Brings A Touch Of Copenhagen Cool To The Iconic Barbour Jacket
Barbour’s history is rooted in a love of the countryside, but its wax jackets aren’t just practical options for outdoor pursuits. Cue a cool collab with Ganni for an outerwear collection destined to charm the street-style set
Ganni’s fashion show in August was like an advert for Copenhagen – think models cycling up and down a sun-drenched pier daubed in chalk art, their joyfully bright outfits showcasing the city’s upbeat, youthful energy. During the show, the label also unveiled its first ever collaboration with Barbour, with one-off upcycled wax jackets thrown over Ganni’s signature leopard print, creating an instantly covetable look perfectly crafted for the fields of Glastonbury.
Indeed, this exciting new collaboration is the perfect fusion of British and Danish style. Barbour is a heritage brand that has always taken inspiration from a traditional, rural lifestyle (case in point: Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana and the Princess of Wales have all been photographed bracing the elements in an iconic wax jacket by the brand). Ganni, meanwhile, is inspired by the eclectic spirit of Copenhagen, with rainbow colors and playful prints sitting at the heart of the label’s eclectic design ethos. Now, having joined forces, these iconic houses have created a capsule of classic jackets that will look just as at home in a European city as England’s wild moors.
“Ganni delved into the Barbour archive and honored its traditions, keeping the classic silhouettes, functional patchwork and tartan lining as a tribute to the brand’s roots
”
To achieve this balance between modern style and heritage design, Ganni delved into the Barbour archive and honored its traditions, keeping the classic silhouettes, functional patchwork and tartan lining as a tribute to the brand’s roots. Then, it added the Ganni spirit with styling signatures, such as oversized silhouettes, statement pockets and dramatic Peter-pan collars, injecting a new lease of life to the Barbour aesthetic that will undoubtedly attract a fresh cohort of wearers. Another addition is a big logo – a distinctive black-and-green design placed front and center on the collection’s bucket hats and jackets.
What’s more, the construction of each piece has been carefully and ethically considered, with Ganni issuing its usual transparency about how the products are made (items are crafted from at least 50 percent certified recycled fabrics or organic cotton) and sharing regular updates about the status of its ‘responsibility game plan’.
“If there’s one thing this collaboration proves, it’s that functional clothing can also double as a directional style statement – whether you’re rambling through rural terrain or heading to a hot city hangout
”
The imagery for the collection also highlights the heritage of both brands, revealing a fusion of two distinct lifestyles and cultural outlooks. While Barbour’s roots – which began in 1894 in South Shields, north east England – are represented in the campaign via a model sitting atop a Land Rover in the countryside, Ganni’s stamp of Copenhagen cool is depicted with a model walking through the capital’s streets, her leopard-print pants, chunky boots and khaki jacket just as suited to urban Denmark as the lush green landscapes of the wild.
