It should come as no surprise, when you consider how vastly our day-to-day lives have changed over the past few months, that lockdown has inspired many of us to take a step back and really assess our closets. At a time when we’re demanding more of our clothes – comfort, polish and elevation, in every sense of the word – we’re truly considering what makes a meaningful purchase. For our senior fashion market editor Libby Page, the importance of buying pieces that inspire and delight has always been clear, but longevity and versatility are also big priorities. Which is exactly why, when Gabriela Hearst’s sleek leather dress landed on the site this week, she purchased this timeless piece, sharpish.

“This season, Gabriela Hearst perfectly illustrated her unique ability to appeal to both minimalists and maximalists in equal measure. This stunning piece is such a fresh take on the tried-and-tested leather dress. The bright-white color caught my eye right away on the runway – with its modern shape and shirt-dress silhouette, you have a perfectly seasonless piece. I knew if I purchased this dress it would be one that would live in my wardrobe forever. This summer, I’ll be styling it as an open coat with a tank top and tailored shorts, and in winter I’ll layer it over a sleeveless turtleneck and knee-high boots.”

If you’re looking to build out your capsule closet with similarly long-lasting pieces, a classic shirt is a fail-safe place to start. Designer Emma Willis’s understated designs are crafted in the English countryside using sustainably sourced materials. Consider her gingham-print shirt an effortless way to add a sense of fun to tailored separates or put a chic spin on denim shorts; finish with a generous helping of gold jewelry to complement sun-kissed skin. Of course, lust-worthy accessories are another no-brainer investment. From Jennifer Chamandi’s modern mules to Christian Louboutin’s ladylike slingbacks and, of course, Bottega Veneta’s cult handbags, these beautiful pieces were made to be worn and cherished for seasons to come.
