The SS19 Trend Report: Workwear
How to give this season’s most-wanted trends an office-appropriate slant, by Dutch stylist LINDA TOL
UTILITY CHIC
“Brown, beige and green are my favorite colors at the moment, so utility is a trend that really works for me. I love to wear a full beige look, but it’s fun to play with mixing the shades as well: a beige dress with a green jacket or a brown suit with a tonal bag. Right now, I’d look first for a blazer and high-waisted shorts or a pantsuit – they’re great go-tos for work because they’re on-trend but timeless, and you can dress them up or down. I’d pair mine with a pair of easy sandals or sneakers for a low-key day, then I’d grab a pair of heels for a meeting at the office.”
“Canvas and tan leather accessories mix really well into this color palette
”
ALL-WEATHER LEATHER
“This season’s leather pieces are lighter and softer than you might expect, so you can wear them when the weather is warmer and there are also so many great faux leathers. I usually pick one statement piece and build my outfit around it – a tailored leather jacket like this one looks great worn with wardrobe classics. I love the contrast of denim and leather together; jeans are not that informal anymore, especially if you choose a pair with a more tailored silhouette, but if you can’t wear them to your office, you could switch them for smart pants.”
“Balance smart and statement by doubling up your leather pants with a leather shirt
”
TAILORING
“I wear a lot of suits because they’re so versatile – it’s very important when I invest in a piece that I can style it in many different ways. I love a suit that’s slightly oversized and not too tailored as it feels a little more relaxed. How I style them really depends on my mood, but right now I tend to wear them with sneakers or boots and with a T-shirt or silk top. I generally like black, gray or dark blue, and this season I love beige. A white suit can look great in summer, too.”
“Pull your hair up then add some red lipstick and a pair of heels to take your suit from day to night
”
SHIRT DRESSING
“A shirt dress is the first thing that pops into my mind when I think about what to wear to work; it’s such a classic and there are so many playful takes right now with different layers, mismatched stripes and pleats. They’re formal enough that you can style them in an interesting way, like layering them over pants, and they’ll still look elevated enough for work. If you don’t want to wear a dress, create a different silhouette with a shirt and skirt in different shades of blue or contrasting stripes.”
“Pair more classic pieces with standout shoes to add an element of interest
”
PATTERN AND PRINT
“My look is generally androgynous with a feminine twist, but I’ve started to wear more dresses, especially in the summer, because they’re so easy. I tend to look for a print that’s a little muted, especially if I’m working, and wear it with sandals during the day and heels at night. I love to wear them with a sweater or a trench coat over the top so that the feminine, girly vibe becomes a bit cooler. If you need to smarten it up even more, then wear your dress with an oversized blazer – it will give your look an element of cool but it’s still office-proof.”
“A silk scarf tied around the handle of your bag is an easy and chic way to inject print into your look
