With its elevated takes on timeless basics, New York label Khaite exudes minimal Manhattanite polish better than most. It’s not surprising, then, that when it came to creating SS22’s hero sun dress – that most tried-and-true of warm-weather staples – the brand eschewed floaty skirts and feminine flourishes in favor of something altogether sleeker and more sophisticated. Spun from softer-than-soft cashmere, its figure-skimming ‘Georgia’ midi embodies easy elegance yet is replete with clever details (from the plunging V-neckline to the horizontal black-and-white stripes). Best of all, it’s the sort of goes-with-everything, hard-working piece that, with a few clever styling tricks, offers round-the-clock appeal. “Now that summer sun is on the horizon, a do-it-all dress feels like an essential,” says shopping assistant Connie Parkinson. “Khaite’s ‘Georgia’ is the sort of fuss-free piece that you can dress up with a tailored blazer and metallic bag for evening, then pair with a loose shirt, gladiator sandals and Savette’s tote for day.”
Elsewhere, designers are championing simple cuts and low-key silhouettes that speak to the laid-back feel of the summer months. Take Matteau’s boyish, boxy silk shirt in a delectable chocolate-brown, or Wandler’s slouchy remix on the classic white jean. Meanwhile, Australian designer Christopher Esber, who is typically known for engineering intricate knits with boundary-pushing cutouts, has served up the most minimally constructed black bikini top that can be slipped on and styled endlessly.
Such pared-back pieces call for an array of accessories – and there’s no shortage of fun to be had in this arena. For a grown-up dash of color, try Gucci’s scaled-down ‘Marmont’ in a moody shade of blue, or Saint Laurent’s supersized rose-tinted frames. And while the humble bucket hat might not traditionally boast high-fashion credentials, the Loewe Paula’s Ibiza version has its own bohemian-luxe spin (in this case made from a summery raffia and emblazoned with a tan-leather logo) that will add a playful, nomadic touch to an everyday outfit. Finally, there’s no easier way to elevate a dialed-down look than to embellish with glittering gold accents. Valentino Garavani’s studded sandals and Cult Gaia’s textured shell-style earrings should certainly do the trick.
