Beauty editors’ essentials: Hot-weather haircare
Has high humidity wreaked havoc on your hair? Our beauty experts reveal their secret weapons to fight frizz and stop color from fading
NEWBY HANDS Beauty Director
“It’s taken years, but I’ve finally found a simple way of making sure my highlighted blond hair gets through the summer in great condition. Firstly, I book in to see Zoltan Vargyai for my twice-yearly Brazilian blow dry. He’s the best I’ve tried – it actually leaves my hair in better condition than pre-treatment and ensures that it’s super-sleek and frizz-free for up to six months. Secondly, every few weeks I use a lilac-tinted shampoo and mask to neutralize those brassy highlights that bleached hair can get under the sun. My favorites are Rahua Color Full Shampoo and the brilliant Christophe Robin Shade Variation Care mask. Lastly, I pull back on all the heat styling: minimal blow-drying, plus no irons or tongs. Instead, I’ll use either Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray or Sachajuan Ocean Mist Texturizing Spray to encourage more beachy waves.”

“I keep my textured, tight curls in box braids during the summer and stick to a quick wash-and-go routine once a week. Since the sun can be damaging to the scalp, I take extra care of it and use the R+Co ACV Cleansing Rinse – the apple cider vinegar is great for deep-cleaning the scalp, balancing pH levels and removing any product build-up. I then use the super-moisturizing Original & Mineral Hydrate & Conquer Conditioner over the mid-to-ends of my braids; it’s the only conditioner I can use on a weekly basis that doesn’t make my braids or extensions slip out. On dry hair, the Vernon François Scalp Nourishment Spray is a great, non-greasy mist that’s been specially formulated for anyone with braids or locs to keep the hair really nourished. It fits in my purse, too.”

“My hair is long, thick and highlighted and tends to get extremely dry and frizzy in the heat, so I switch up my daily haircare routine for something ultra-moisturizing, such as R+Co Television Perfect Hair Shampoo and Conditioner. If I’ve been out in the sun, I always use Sachajuan Hair After The Sun mask to restore the moisture lost through UV damage. To create that easy texture, I layer Playa Endless Summer Spray through the lengths with Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray at the roots, and finish with an all-over mist of Oribe Imperméable Anti-Humidity spray to seal everything in and stop frizz-creating humidity from penetrating the hair shaft.”
