Yes, butter yellow really is trending again. The creamy hue, which dominated runways (and our social feeds) last spring, is back, albeit in a more nuanced way. Rather than embracing the shade from head to toe, tastemakers are treating butter yellow more as a neutral – using it to elevate richer hues, such as burgundy, charcoal and forest green. Just ask Alexa Chung – an early adopter of the trend – who styled a buttercream Oxford shirt (back to front, no less) to perfection with a navy kilt and olive-green pumps a few months ago. Or Love Story actor and PORTER cover star Sarah Pidgeon, who paired her buttercup-yellow skirt with an oatmeal knit and black accessories in Milan.
“Warmer than lemon but not quite as intense as mustard, butter yellow hits the sweet spot between subtle and statement-making,” says NET-A-PORTER junior shopping editor Millie Parry, who has several butter-yellow pieces in her wish list, including Agolde’s ‘Laria’ jeans and Toteme’s ‘Naplack’ thong sandals.“It’s such a joyful color, too; I love how it can uplift your mood as well as your outfit,” she adds.
Remember, understated sophistication is the goal here, which is easy to achieve with the right staples. Take cues from Chung’s style playbook by teaming Versace’s cable-knit vest with an indigo denim skirt and copper-toned heels for an effortlessly elegant desk-to-dinner look. Alternatively, reach for Toteme’s tie-front midi dress – the perfect slip-on-and-go style – and finish with a heather-gray knit tied nonchalantly over your shoulders.

As for the weekend (or any time you’re off-duty), embrace a relaxed look with Dôen’s lingerie-inspired ‘Iona’ shorts. Cut from languid silk-satin in the color of whipped butter and trimmed with delicate lace, they’re surprisingly versatile – and comfortable, too. “I plan on wearing Chloé’s shorts all summer long, with oversized shirts and flip flops, adding touches of contrasting color through my accessories,” says Parry. Chloé’s gathered jacket from NET-A-PORTER’s exclusive edit and Lisa Yang’s ‘Amya’ tank are winners, too – both look great styled with dark-blue jeans and an oxblood shoulder bag.
