By subverting the tired tropes associated with ‘sexy’ dressing, the New York-based label is pioneering a new, distinctly modern vision
Despite the fact that New York-based brand Khaite is just shy of celebrating its fifth anniversary, the label has already left an indelible impression on the fashion landscape. Creative director Catherine Holstein’s effortlessly elegant vision of modern American style has captivated fashion editors and buyers since day one. Nowadays, Khaite is one of the highlights of New York Fashion Week and has become a sartorial byword for elevated style. Because, while Holstein’s debut was limited to closet essentials such as crisp shirting, blue denim and cashmere sweaters, over the seasons she has tackled and transformed new categories, including after-dark dressing. In fact, the questions she asked herself when it came to designing her FW20 collection was, “What would sexy look like in 2020?” Needless to say, since Holstein first posed this question back in February, it’s become an even more complex one. With the global pandemic causing people across the globe to reassess many things, not least of which their relationship with the clothes hanging in their closets, the symbolic and emotive power of fashion has never been more relevant.
“Even under normal circumstances party dressing can be tricky to master; the category is so synonymous with sequins, sparkles and high hemlines that even the most assured women can feel the pressure to comply with this narrow take on evening attire… What became obvious was that Holstein’s definition represented a departure from traditional notions
”
This year led many of us to realize that, although fashion is often accused of being frivolous, it plays a vital role in boosting everything from our mood to our confidence. Now, as we approach the holiday season, the question of whether to dress up at all has posited by many. However, since reasons to be cheerful have felt to be in short supply lately, we’d argue that it’s more important than ever to indulge in the joy of dressing up.
Of course, even under normal circumstances party dressing can be tricky to master; the category is so synonymous with sequins, sparkles and high hemlines that even the most assured women can feel the pressure to comply with this narrow take on evening attire. Similarly, when Holstein came to meditate on the word ‘sexy’ when conceiving of her FW20 collection, what became obvious was that her definition represented a departure from traditional notions. Take this season’s scene-stealing ruched black top. From the front this perfectly structured high-neck piece appears almost demure, however the back reveals cut-out details and crystal embellishment – perfect for twinkling in candlelight. Paired with wide-leg tailored pants and velvet slippers, this striking piece makes for an alternative take on after-dark dressing that works just as well for a festive soirée as it does for a Zoom party. The same is true of the label’s oversized silk blouse, complete with ’80s-inspired print. This laidback yet luxe piece makes the perfect addition to any WFH capsule; however, worn with just a handful of the buttons closed and paired with metallic tiger-print pants – à la Bella Hadid on the FW20 runway – this souped-up staple feels decidedly sensual.
Therein lies the magic of Khaite’s aesthetic: even the most maximal pieces are tempered by a versatility that ensures you’ll reach for them time and time again, no matter what occasion you’re dressing for. Holstein’s vision of sexy style is underlined by a sense of ease, and nothing is more alluring than that.
