The fashion brands to watch for 2019
Which new names are being whispered about – and worn – by discerning fashion insiders? We’ve been eavesdropping…
ARJÉ
When husband and wife team Oliver Corral and Bessie Afnaim launched Arjé, they wanted to create modern luxury essentials in everything from fluid silk to fuzzy shearling that could be endlessly and effortlessly layered with each other. Their approach – and their seasonless, wear-forever pieces – have earned them fans like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Camille Charrière. The label’s current color palette of biscuit, beige and burnt orange is one of the chicest of the season.
PETER DO
He may have only been in the industry for a short time, but Peter Do already has pretty impeccable fashion credentials: he won the LVMH prize for graduates in 2014, then spent two years working under Phoebe Philo at Céline, followed by 18 months at Derek Lam. Now he’s struck out on his own with an eponymous line that riffs on menswear staples and silhouettes with a thoroughly modern spin on grown-up glamour.
BERNADETTE
A fashionable family affair, Bernadette is the co-creation of Charlotte de Geyter and her mother, Bernadette. The Antwerp-based label hinges around ultra-feminine and utterly simple dresses; from kimono-style wrap dresses and fluted-sleeve tunics to pretty slip dresses, they take classic shapes and add excitement with colorful prints. That’s your vacation and summer wedding outfits sorted.
OCHI
This Ukraine-based label (Ochi means ‘eyes’ in Ukrainian) is set to transform your outerwear game. Designed by Iana Kuznietsova, its cotton and vegan leather trenches and faux-fur coats, all whipped up in dreamy neutral and pastel shades, are practical enough to be day-to-day essentials with enough polish and subtle detailing to make them feel special. The label is branching out into separates, too – look out for its take on the short suit, set to be a SS19 staple.
Ochi will launch this month on NET-A-PORTER.
COMMISSION
New York-based trio and former university classmates Jin Kay, Dylan Cao and Huy Luong aren’t just using their fledgling label to offer up your dream capsule wardrobe (think masculine tailoring, floral dresses and smart-meets-cool office-ready separates.). They’re also riffing on Asian culture, side-stepping stereotypes and taking an original look at their community – all inspired by the clothes that their mothers wore in the ’80s and ’90s working in Korea and Vietnam.
Commission will launch this month on NET-A-PORTER.
