7 Fresh, Modern Ways To Wear Eye Makeup Right Now
With the season’s darker, longer days in full effect, adding a little lightness to your makeup can make the world of difference to your look and mood. Here, Hermès Beauty’s creative director GREGORIS PYRPYLIS tells MALENA HARBERS how, done right, a subtle pop of color on the eyes can revive and refresh a winter-weary complexion in seconds
Think small
“The best way to incorporate color into your look is to apply it to a small area only, such as along the lashline,” says Pyrpylis. Choose a bold colored eyeshadow instead of an eyeliner for a softer, more diffused effect, too. Look to Hermès Beauty’s Ombres d’Hermès Eyeshadow palettes – they feature one vibrant shade that works in harmony with the other three in the palette. “These are very rich colors, but discreet and subdued at the same time,” says Pyrpylis. “Use the brush that comes with the palette to take the color into the roots of the upper or lower lashes – the more vibrant you choose to go, the less color you should use. By keeping the color more condensed, it gives a small hit of freshness without having an overwhelming effect.”
Embellish with mascara
If you prefer a more minimalist approach to your makeup, a colored mascara works just as well to elevate your look. “Use the tip of the mascara brush to apply a hint of color into the lash roots, or at the curve of the lashes where the light hits, avoiding the ends, for a twinkle of color when you blink.” For an after-dark look, add a base of black mascara before applying your chosen colored iteration. “Use your mascara brush to paint some highlights of color through your lashes, as you would do on your hair,” says Pyrpylis. “The result is elegant and discreet.”
Enhance your eye color
According to Pyrpylis, the right shades can flatter and enhance your eye color when paired correctly. “Greens and blues work beautifully on hazel or brown eyes, as they bring out their golden tones, while violet and Hermès Rouge H mascara – a rich bordeaux shade – will make blue or green eyes even more vivid, as they are a complete contrast to these colors.”
Mix and match hues (but keep them subdued)
When it comes to what color palette to use, anything goes, says Pyrpylis, as long as you bring balance to the eyes. Try contrasting shades for a more playful approach to your look – when worn in small doses, it may surprise you how flattering they can be, while making a powerful beauty statement. “For instance, use the orange highlighter color from the eyeshadow palette in the 03 Ombre Fauves shade, paired with a violet mascara, for a stunning effect,” says Pyrpylis. “This works because you’re playing with nuances rather than bold colors.”
Smoke it out
When it comes to a smoky eye, you can play with color here, too, but keep it deep and jewel-toned rather than bright and brash. “I don’t like perfection when it comes to a smoky eye, either; I like to feel that it’s lived in and unpolished,” says Pyrpylis. To get the look, start with a dab of lip balm: “Use your fingertip to apply it to the top of your eyelid. Then, take your dark shade – a dark blue works beautifully – and apply it precisely into the roots of your lashes using Hermès Beauty’s Eyeshadow Eyeliner Brush – a small, flat, angled brush. Next, use your fingers to blend the powder and the balm together to create a creamy eyeshadow texture. Continue blending outwards and around the rim of the upper and lower lashlines, to get the most beautiful-colored smoky-eye effect.” To finish it off, Pyrpylis always applies another dab of lip balm to the top of the eyelid for a lived-in finish.
Add a foil finish for evening
“In the evening, lighting is generally lower, so you can go higher in intensity with your eye makeup,” advises Pyrpylis. “I’d do a colored smoky eye, but finish with a silver highlighter on the lids. Use your finger to press it gently into the top of your eyelid, over the dark eyeshadow, for a metallic, polished finish that will bring more dimension to your look. You can do the same on the lower lashline – right in the middle of the lashes– which will help to open up the eye as well.”
Pair color with nearly-bare skin
“When you’re wearing bold color on your eyes, let the focus remain there,” says Pyrpylis. “And bring in an element of rawness through your skin. Do this by avoiding foundation that’s too heavy – a tinted moisturizer or Hermès Beauty’s Complexion Balm is ideal here, to keep the finish naturally glowy.” Make sure lips are hydrated as well: “I’d stick to bare lips, or a sheer rose hue if you like a hint of color.”
