If you can’t have a little fun with your outfits on the Fourth of July, when can you? Whether you lean into the patriotic red, white and blue palette or throw in a star-spangled accessory or two, there are plenty of playful ways to embrace the theme. That being said, there is a balance to be struck – go overboard and you risk your look feeling more like a costume for the holiday parade than an outfit you’d wear to the beach or a cookout. The trick to keeping things chic is to choose pieces that suit the occasion yet feel timeless enough to include in your everyday summer rotation, too.

“Few things encapsulate classic Americana quite like denim, so I’ll be making it the focal point of my outfits this weekend,” says NET-A-PORTER’s shopping editor, Viktorija Tomasevic. “I plan on styling Nili Lotan’s ‘Travis’ shirt with a pair of straight-leg jeans a la Cindy Crawford and Alaïa’s thong sandals for drinks with friends,” she adds.

Alternatively, take cues from Taylor Swift – who is rumored to be getting married in New York this weekend to fiancée Travis Kelce – by styling Dôen’s prairie-style ‘Henri’ blouse in ruffled broderie anglaise with a denim mini skirt and flats. Heading to the coast? Be sure to pack Staud’s ‘Cadence’ swimsuit for a celebratory dip in the sea and Simone Rocha’s ruffled bloomer-style shorts to slip on afterwards.

If you can’t resist a romantic summer dress, then you’ll love this ‘Brielle’ style, also by Dôen. Made from lightweight organic cotton and printed with a ’60s-inspired ‘Alderbrook Plaid’, it’s an effortless choice for daytime events, from garden parties to picnics, and couldn’t be easier to style. Pick out the red checks with Khaite’s ‘Olivia’ bag in soft red suede and Celine’s ‘Triomphe’ sunglasses, finishing with Jennifer Meyer’s star-shaped earrings and Le Monde Béryl’s ‘Stella’ Mary Jane flats from our NET SUSTAIN edit.
