It’s with good reason that denim forms the backbone of our day-to-day style. While famously being one of those stealth closet heroes that is considered unassuming and dependable, it often sets the agenda for an entire era of trends – think ’70s flared jeans and ’00s denim everything. As for 2023? Read on to discover the shapes, washes and styles to refresh your look…

Double denim

An oldie but a goodie, double denim promises instant cool. The key here: don’t overthink it. Yes, you can mix washes and silhouettes – in fact, white denim jeans paired with an indigo shirt makes for a chic summer look. Classic light blues are also a match made in heaven, so tuck Petar Petrov’s ‘Maxine’ shirt into Mother’s high-rise, wide-leg style and finish with a pair of block-heeled mules to emphasize the leg-lengthening powers of a flared pant.

The denim maxi skirt is set to be big news for SS23 – and makes the perfect partner to a leather jacket

Quickly gaining ground as SS23’s most in-demand denim update is the maxi skirt. Reminiscent of 90s styles, it puts a dressed-up twist on an off-duty staple. Sure to be a mainstay for fashion week show-goers – currently touching down in Milan – give it a try with this Alexander McQueen A-line style, paired with Acne Studios leather biker jacket, then complete your look with Jimmy Choo’s ankle boots and Jacquemus pretty ‘Le Bisou’ bag in a cheerful pop of orange.

Extra-wide-leg jeans

Mirroring 2023’s relaxation of tailored pants, denim has taken on a more languid vibe, too. You’re sure to find a pair of Goldsign jeans hanging in most fashion insiders’ closets, and this super-wide style from the LA-based brand is the one to add to basket now. Pairing them with a neat cardigan, such as Acne Studios’ yellow version, will temper their voluminous silhouette, while mid-heeled mules by Proenza Schouler and Loewe sunglasses will elevate their relaxed feel.

Super-wide-leg jeans are the style of the season – take note from Grece Ghanem and pair with a slim-fit top to balance proportions

Denim accessories

If your love for denim doesn’t end at ready-to-wear, you’re in luck. Leading designers, from JW Anderson to Isabel Marant, have decked out some of their key accessories in this laid-back fabric. The latter’s ‘Ririo’ boots will add instant ’90s cool to any look. A denim handbag, meanwhile, is a playful finishing touch to monochromatic outfits – JW Anderson and Acne Studios have made two of the most sought-after styles.

As one of the most seasonally transcending fabrics, a denim dress is one you’ll wear throughout the year with a few styling switch-ups. Giuliva Heritage’s belted maxi style can be layered over turtleneck knits and knee boots now, then worn with strappy sandals in warmer months.
