5 European Destinations To Soak Up The Last Of The Summer Sun

Finca Cortesin

As summer starts to slip away, a final sun-kissed sojourn is the perfect way to bid the season farewell before your vacation wardrobe is packed away. If, by chance, further persuasion were needed, September and October are also often prime months to visit some of the continent’s most dazzling destinations

Enjoy the last rays of summer sun at Finca Cortesin’s glorious estate

Finca Cortesin, Andalucía, Spain

Spain’s long, golden summer makes the southern coastal region of Andalucía particularly inviting once fall looms on the horizon. Close to the whitewashed hilltop village of Casares, Finca Cortesin is set on a colossal 532-acre estate, with 67 suites and a sense of expanse that feels especially luxurious when the seasonal crowds are no longer in sight. Make the most of the milder temperatures (the average daytime high is 77°F in October) with tennis, padel or a hike through the surrounding hills, before retreating to the 2,200-square-meter spa, where thermal baths and a heated saltwater pool are a great way to spend time when the day eventually cools. A short shuttle away, the resort’s 6,000-square-meter beach club keeps the summer mood going beside a 35-meter infinity pool with Balinese beds and exquisite Mediterranean lunches.

Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel is a boutique stay in the gorgeous port city of Antibes

Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel, France

The Côte d’Azur’s charm is legendary. While most flock to its riviera throughout peak vacation season, the last few weeks of summer and the beginning of fall, when the buzz of its most frenetic weeks has faded, is arguably a far superior time to make the trip. Set directly on the water, the 35-room Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel – a concept from Chapitre Six, a collection of independent, design-led boutique properties across France – is full of zesty, playful energy. Architect Bernard Dubois imagined it to amalgamate Palm Springs geometry with Mediterranean villa style. Pink marble and ice-cream hued finishes catch the eye wherever you turn, plus there is an infinity pool and a private sandy beach to complete the holiday fantasy. Linger at Baba during the day, the hotel’s lively beach restaurant, before dressing for dinner at Michelin-starred Les Pêcheurs.

Odera is an understated stay on the island of Tinos, designed with traditional Tinian stonework and minimalist furnishings

Odera, Tinos, Greece

Given the unspoilt, rustic nature of the island of Tinos, it comes as a surprise that it’s just a 15-minute boat ride from Mykonos. The dramatic, rugged landscape of this charming Cyclades gem is punctuated by the greenery of sprawling vineyards and olive groves, as well as quintessential, whitewashed villages. Odera is an idyllically understated retreat on the island, decked in traditional Tinian stonework and marble furnishings, and hidden in a peaceful bay with a private beach. Every room and suite here has a scintillating Aegean outlook and the wellness offering is extensive – which is apt for a hotel where the ethos is all about slowing down, unwinding and soaking up the natural beauty of a secret delight.

Palazzo Avino, Ravello, Italy

Summer often seems not to want to leave the Amalfi Coast, such are the continuing long days and slow sunsets, and Ravello is the perfect place to indulge in an end-of-season break. Situated 350 meters above the Mediterranean, Palazzo Avino is a fantastically famous, pink 12th-century palazzo with just 43 rooms and suites, glorious coastal views and an enduring, charming, family-run feel. The real late-summer treat lies 15 minutes down the hillside in Marmorata, where the hotel’s Clubhouse by the Sea offers a private playground of bathing platforms, loungers and a small saltwater pool, with steps leading directly into the water. It remains open until October, so book in now for aperitivos at the Lobster & Martini Bar or an elegant dinner at Michelin-starred Rossellinis.

Hôtel du Couvent has been beautifully converted, featuring elegant interiors, terraced gardens and a delightful pool

Hôtel du Couvent, Nice, France

Hot and thrumming in the height of summer, the South of France takes on a hazy, golden charm come September and October. In the Old Town of Nice, Hôtel du Couvent is a recent addition to the French Riviera’s sublime hotel scene. A sunshine-hued 16th-century monastery that has been meticulously reimagined, there is a beautiful candlelit cloister restaurant at the heart of the surrounding convent buildings, where peaceful monastic rooms and scenic sea-view apartments are adorned with breezy linens, antiques and works of art. The resident herbalist and onsite bakery fill the courtyard with tempting aromas, while the steps up through the winding terraced gardens reveal the swimming pool, which offers up views across the picturesque Nice rooftops, stretching all the way out to the sea.
