These iconic watches are the ultimate forever pieces

A luxury watch can be the ultimate investment purchase – here’s how to choose one that will stand the test of time

The wristwatch boasts a pretty illustrious history. Queen Elizabeth I was one of the first known women to possess one, gifted to her by lifelong friend and would-be suitor Robert Dudley in 1571. After receiving the royal seal of approval, the watch became a revered essential – exclusively worn by women. In fact, men didn’t trade in their pocket watches until well into the 20th century. More than four centuries later, the options can seem endless, which is why we’ve edited things down, to help you choose a watch that will suit your personal style.

When it comes to women’s watches, most models fall into two distinct camps. There are the classic styles that are destined to live on your left wrist and work perfectly with your everyday look; then there are the more ornate designs, often saved exclusively for special occasions. Our top tip? Forgo these outdated formalities. Whether you love the simplicity of IWC Schaffhausen’s eternal designs or the clean lines of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s classic ‘Reverso’, pair your chosen timepiece with everything from blue jeans to an evening gown (which might seem like the distant future right now, but there will come a time when events are back on the agenda). Prefer statement to understated? Consider ornate diamond-studded timepieces by the likes of Piaget, Cartier and Vacheron Constantin – many of which are set on colorful leather straps – every day of the week. If lockdown has taught us one thing, it’s that our favorite feel-good pieces shouldn’t just be saved for ‘special’ occasions.
