Laid Bare

Corsets and barely-there bralettes were worn as outerwear at several shows, delivering romance and allure in equal measure. Valentino Garavani styled jewel-toned bustier tops with statement pencil skirts, cummerbunds and opera gloves while Haider Ackerman made a case for bras as tops, pairing strapless and triangle-shaped underpinnings with razor-sharp tailoring and sheer slips. Chloé’s iterations, meanwhile, were softer and more romantic, with delicate scalloped lace, delicate ribbons and silk-covered buttons evocative of vintage underpinnings.

Wear now: Style Ulla Johnson’s ‘Ottavia’ bustier top with a pencil skirt and heels, or style Pauline Dujancourt’s ‘Georgia’ bralette with the matching skirt from the runway.

’80s Power Play

Designers including Valentino Garavani, Dries Van Noten, Loewe and Givenchy put a modern spin on the ’80s for spring/summer ’27. Alessandro Michele paired sharp-shouldered jackets with lace cycling shorts and pencil skirts at Valentino Garavani, which came in a mix of acid-bright hues, from spearmint and lilac to purple and chartreuse. At Dries Van Noten, Julian Klausner channeled old Hollywood glamour but with just a hint of kitsch ’80s librarian chic thrown in – think striped scoop-neck tanks paired with pantaloons and layered necklaces, and dusty pastel shades mixed with neon-pink, orange and lime-green. Elsewhere, Givenchy’s Sarah Burton and Loewe’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez channeled an ’80s spirit via high-voltage color, windbreakers and pencil skirts.

Wear now: Channel the mood with Valentino Garavani’s faux-fur-trimmed lime-green jacket and a pair of white leather pumps, or team Versace’s purple tank with a leather pencil skirt and heels.

The Gilded Age

Baroque textures and silhouettes inspired by historical dress brought glamour and majesty to the runways. From Regency-era brocades, feathers and gilded cloqué to dramatic puffball gowns and corsets, Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten, Acne Studios and Valentino Garavani all reimagined opulence for the new age. Anthony Vaccarello presented what is rumored to be his final collection for Saint Laurent by paying tribute to Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic fall/winter 1991 Rive Gauche show, but in reverse order. All but 10 of the looks came in glittering gold leather, guipure lace, lamé and brocade, before gradually transitioning to black for the finale. Elsewhere, references ranging from the Renaissance to the Palace of Versailles shaped Jonny Johansson’s decade-defying collection for Acne Studios, where frock coats, puffball dresses and buckled shoes were unexpectedly paired with leather and denim for a cool contrast.

Wear now: Elevate evening looks with Saint Laurent’s metallic floral-jacquard top and Jil Sander’s asymmetric puffball skirt, adding a heel and lashings of gold jewelry.
