The humble denim jacket is a cornerstone of our closets – as vital to our off-duty look as our favorite pair of jeans. And, this season, a host of designers have reimagined the versatile staple with directional details and chic colors to elevate it to a workwear and after-dark piece, too. Whatever the occasion, here are five looks you’ll never want to take off – plus, how to wear them.
Do double denim
Double denim is a classic look for a valid reason. Why wouldn’t you want to combine two pieces that are absolute archetypes of laid-back cool? One thing to bear in mind is that washes should be complementary – Alex Mill’s vintage-feel jacket matches perfectly with Re/Done’s light-blue jeans, for example. For a modern take on this look, style it with accessories that will add polish to denim’s low-key vibe; Saint Laurent’s clean-lined ‘Manhattan’ shoulder bag and Jimmy Choo’s pristine PVC mules will bring the look together. As for what to wear underneath, Danish tastemaker Pernille Teisbaek looks the picture of sophistication in a fitted turtleneck – and, on warmer days, a white tee will do the trick, too.
Explore expert layering
Your denim jacket can be a clever layering piece for trans-seasonal weather, lending a sense of laid-back cool to tailored coats. The luxe ivory iteration by Fendi, for example, has a sleek, shirt-like silhouette (otherwise known as a shacket), which can be worn buttoned-up beneath a billowing oversized number, such as Bite Studio’s belted trench. The trick here is to choose contrasting but complementary shades – Fendi’s clean white is the perfect companion to Bite Studio’s cool gray, while a classic tan trench will enhance the depth of saturated indigo.
Team with tailored pants
High-waisted, wide-leg pants are the silhouette of the season. Comfortable yet smart, they represent the perfect transitional piece to take you from last year’s loungewear – but this look is as much about how you’re wearing them as it is the pants themselves. According to arbiter of style Christine Centenera, pairing them with a classic denim jacket and sandals is the 2022 epitome of a refined yet relaxed day-to-day aesthetic. Acne Studios’ stonewashed and lightly dressed jacket comes in an oversized silhouette that will ‘dress down’ the pants for off-duty days and casual office dress codes. The key here is to choose pants that are fitted around the waist to balance the volume. In cooler months, it will layer beautifully over chunky knits, too. Hoop earrings, leather sandals and red lipstick are all classic style signifiers that complete the look.
Work it after hours
Putting its signature directional spin on a closet staple, Alexander McQueen’s denim jacket comes with some artfully puffed-up sleeves. It’s the kind of jacket you can layer over a slip dress for dinners with friends, dates nights and parties. Its roomy sleeves add instant insouciance to eveningwear, so you can opt for glam accessories to really nail this hi-lo look – sleek mules and a sophisticated shoulder bag are ideal.
Respin suitcase staples
With all of this versatility to its name, it’s no wonder the denim jacket is a packing essential. From sun dresses (à la Tamu McPherson) to linen shirting, it will pair with pretty much everything you can fit into your carry-on. For days spent sightseeing, layer Anine Bing’s ’90s-style jacket over a printed sun dress, such as Rixo’s floral maxi, and style with white tennis sneakers and oversized shades. If you’re beach-bound, be sure to pop it in your bag to ward off an evening chill on sunset strolls.
