We all have pieces in our closets that we can’t bear to part with, whether it’s a coveted luxury item, a special gift from a loved one, or a hard-working pair of jeans that goes with everything. Thankfully, extending the life of your everyday staples and irreplaceable must-haves is now an effortless task with NET-A-PORTER’s repairs-and-alterations service, powered by The Seam.
“The Seam supports a future for fashion where clothes fit well, are cared for, and made to last,” says Layla Sargent, founder of The Seam. The service is dedicated to encouraging a more conscious relationship with our clothes, supporting alterations, repairs or made-to-measure projects that will extend the life of our pieces so that we can treasure them for longer.
“The service allows customers across the UK to access repairs for their clothes, shoes and accessories, as well as garment alterations [currently available in London only]. The technology we’ve built provides a seamless experience for customers to care for their items in just a few clicks. Every garment is insured and, depending on the fabric and type of repair required, matched to the best local, specialist ‘maker’,” adds Sargent.
The Seam has a dedicated team that finds, vets and liaises with a community of makers to ensure that every project is in trusted hands. Makers are quality-checked in person, and The Seam hosts frequent maker meet-ups to share ideas and improve training. Thanks to the talent of this expert community, customers can alter a pair of pants for the perfect fit, give a second life to well-loved knitwear, make invisible repairs to moth-eaten silk or remove ink stains from a beloved designer handbag.
We often solve cases of heart-breaking stains with creative embroidery, such as a blouse with non-removable pen marks on the cuffs that one of our makers was able to cover with beautiful embroidery that looks like it has always been there”
“We often solve cases of heart-breaking stains with creative embroidery, such as a blouse with non-removable pen marks on the cuffs that one of our makers was able to cover with beautiful embroidery that looks like it has always been there,” says Sargent. “We also had a customer bring us a stunning ’70s-style evening gown passed down to her from her late great-aunt. She was committed to rewearing the piece, but the style and fit weren’t quite right, so through some alterations and a new shorter length, the piece became one of her go-to party dresses. She also plans to have a matching bag made from the additional fabric we took off the hem.”
