Hardwearing yet lightweight and sustainable, linen has long been a staple fabric for the summer months, but more often than not, it’s found in the form of shapeless smocks and over-sized shorts. However, for spring/summer ’20, a handful of agenda-setting designers debuted luxe linen dresses that swiftly made it on to our wish lists.
Gabriela Hearst played up to the classic fabric’s bohemian connotations by creating an ethereal white gown finished with puffed sleeves and subtly sexy paneling. JW Anderson took this idea one step further, forgoing romance in favor of ’70s-inspired rock ‘n’ roll with an embellished, floor-skimming dress complete with cut-out. Whatever style you’re drawn to, pair it with leather slides and chunky gold jewelry for a chic take on off-duty dressing. Later down the line, when weddings, vacations and dinner dates (beyond the confines of your kitchen) are back on the agenda, barely-there sandals and statement earrings are all you need for an insouciant after-dark look.
If it’s something more polished you’re after, look no further than Rejina Pyo’s ’40s-inspired iteration. It is the cut that makes this piece perfection; the subtly cinched, belted waist and streamlined skirt combine to give the illusion of endless legs. While this elegant dress is sure to add a sense of ceremony to supermarket trips, it will also be a no-brainer when it comes to choosing that all-important first-day-back-in-the-office look.
