GOLDEN GLOBES: THE LOWDOWN

What’s special about the Golden Globes?

Globes have been awarded since 1944, making 2019’s event the 76th annual ceremony. The accolades are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a non-profit organization made up of around 90 journalists and photographers from over 50 countries. To be eligible, projects (the Globes cover film and television) must have been released between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year. It’s a long roll call – there are 25 categories to be won. Taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday 6, it’s considered a telling precursor to the Oscars.

Who are the most prolific winners?

Her Unofficial Majesty, Meryl Streep, has a bookcase creaking with Golden Globes, nine in total, with one of them an honorary allocation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Barbra Streisand can also claim nine, of which five are honorary, plus wins for non-acting achievements: producing 1976’s A Star is Born and composing the song Love Theme from the same movie, and her Best Director win for Yentl – to date, she is still the only woman to have won in this category.

Other prolific collectors include Shirley MacLaine (seven), Angela Lansbury (six) and Jessica Lange (five), while four actresses have won two acting awards in the same year: Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist; Working Girl); Joan Plowright (Enchanted April; Stalin); Helen Mirren (The Queen; Elizabeth I); and Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road; The Reader).

Who are the previous red-carpet winners?

Last year’s ceremony was notable for its moving demonstration of female solidarity: attendees dressed in black to ensure that the attention was not disproportionately focused on what women wore rather than their incredible achievements. It was a powerful statement. In the preceding 74 outings, memorable looks have included Jennifer Lopez in yellow Giambattista Valli, 2016; Lupita Nyong’o’s scarlet Ralph Lauren in 2014; Keira Knightley’s 2006 white Valentino outing; Julia Roberts in an oversized men’s Armani suit, 1990; Julie Andrews’ super-simple white long-sleeved dress, 1966; Marilyn Monroe’s sparkling black halterneck dress in 1962; and Anita Ekberg in her strapless white lace gown with elbow-length gloves, 1956.
