The beauty hacks that editors swear by

Sometimes there just isn’t time to play by the beauty rule book, and even PORTER’s beauty team cheat occasionally. Here are their editor-approved shortcuts…

NEWBY HANDS, Global Beauty Director

For super-speedy moisturizing… Bathing in asses milk is an ancient traditional beauty treatment to keep skin soft and gently polished. Adding up to a cup of powdered milk to my bath has the same effect, leaving skin soothed and nourished – it’s great on dry skin, too, as it has smoothing effect.

To make your sheet mask do double duty… A good sheet mask usually comes soaked in a lot of excess treatment serum (do scoop out all of the extra left in the bottom of the sachet), so once the sheet is finished on my face, I scrunch it up and wipe it over my arms and legs to moisturize.

To minimize your clutch-bag kit… I dip a fine eyeliner brush into that mascara that’s always left at the end of the wand after applying (it has to be waterproof) and use it to tightline my lashes from beneath. It creates a liner that doesn’t budge or smudge as easily as regular eyeliner, and the color generally has more intensity. Be sparing with the mascara and wash the eyeliner brush you use afterwards so that the bristles don’t harden. You can use the same technique over eyeshadow to cheat a liner that will stay put all night.

To soothe sensitive skin… My skin is super-sensitive, and in the colder months it gets worse. I find that adding oatmeal to a bath works better than any product I’ve tried: it contains anti-inflammatory properties that calm and soothe sensitive skin and even skin conditions such as eczema. Make sure you wrap the oats in muslin before adding them to the warm water (buy them milled so they infuse the water more quickly), otherwise it feels as though you’re soaking in porridge!

  • Mascara Terrybly Waterproof - Black 1
  • Rough Cut Bath Soap - Almond Exfoliant, 210g
  • Resurrection Bath Soak, 283g

To ban blemishes from your bikini line… AHA peels are known to be great skin smoothers, as they gently exfoliate and soften any scarring and bumps. But don’t stop at the face – use on the backs of your arms, knees and particularly the bikini line post-wax or epilation for smooth, blemish-free skin. Not only does it slough away dead skin, but it also gets rid of razor bumps and ingrown hairs, leaving you with clear, bump-free skin (just don’t use on open cuts).

To tan in super-quick time… If you’re pressed for time, try the ultimate red-carpet faux-tan cheat: work out which bits of skin will be on show and and simply use product on those areas. It still gives you the boost of confidence that comes with a fresh glow, but without the effort of applying top to toe.

  • Alpha Beta® Ultra Gentle Daily Peel
  • Instant Hero, 150ml
  • Skin Brilliance Priming Pads - 24 Pads
  • Perfect Legs Gradual Tan, 120ml

For DIY cryotherapy… Keep two dessert spoons chilled in your refrigerator, as we all know the incredible effects of cryotherapy (using extreme cold temperatures to reduce puffiness and inflammation), and this is a quick fix for tired, puffy eyes. Using the curved outer base of a spoon, gently sweep upwards under the eye and over dark circles for an instant pick-me-up. You could also use this over a sheet mask in place of a jade roller – but remember, always use upwards and outwards motions, never back and forth.

To clean your hair overnight… Dry shampoo has eked out many second or third hair day, but you’ve probably been using it wrong. If you won’t have time for a hair wash in the morning, spray your roots with dry shampoo (avoid mousses or foams) right before you sleep. Don’t worry about visible powder as the natural movement and oils will absorb it during the night. Wrap your hair in a silk turban to avoid leaving residue on your pillowcase, then just brush out in the morning.
