Sports-luxe sandals

To embrace comfort and style, look no further than Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock’s sandals – they have just arrived in sleek monochrome. These two iconic brands have merged the functional, comfortable qualities of Birkenstock with Proenza Schouler’s artworld-inflected, contemporary design codes. Other brands that are also fashionably fusing the comfort of sportswear with a luxury finish include Simone Rocha and Arizona Love – Rocha’s chic flatforms will elevate your everyday looks, while Arizona Love’s leopard-print numbers will add a hit of color to monochrome ensembles.

Thong sandals

Barely-there, dainty sandals with a ’90s allure are the easiest way to add a touch of sex appeal to your outfit. For heels, opt for variations in leather and suede – like the ones by Gianvito Rossi – and wear them with straight-cut jeans in winter, switching to an ankle-skimming pleated skirt in hotter climates. Flat versions by Chloé, Valentino or The Row lend an elegant touch to easy-going style.

Square-toe heels

Firmly on the radar this season is the square-toed shoe – with pairs by Bottega Veneta, Porte & Paire and Paciotti giving your outfit a contemporary edge, literally. Wear monochrome versions with floral prints to channel sophisticated femininity, or opt for a pop of color worn with an all-black ensemble to draw attention to the architectural shape. These effortless slip-on-and-go sandals were understandably a huge hit on the SS20 runways, particularly when worn with silk slip dresses and head-to-toe leather. Don’t be late to the party – be there and be square.

Bags

Practical day bags

In recent seasons, the practical bag has been given a high-fashion revamp. Chloé’s textured leather tote, featuring a detachable miniature pouch that doubles up as a chic clutch, will ensure you’re prepped to seize the day. Pair with a textured knit (in cashmere or mohair) and jeans for a relaxed but pulled-together look. For casual sophistication, seek out pieces in sculptural shapes, such as Loewe’s bucket bag, which comes in four versatile colorways. Just like the majority of leatherware by Loewe, the so-called Balloon bag features a subtle embossing of the latest logo. This refined, illustrative design was reimagined following Jonathan Anderson’s appointment as creative director of the house in 2013.

The ’90s shoulder bag

Sandals aren’t the only piece from this era that have come full circle – minimalist shoulder bags are also making a chic comeback. Seek out styles with a patent sheen, such as those by Saint Laurent, for a touch of rock ’n’ roll. Pair them with high-waisted ‘mom’ jeans and an oversized trench for casual sophistication, or with a silk slip dress and mules for a modern take on ’90s eveningwear. Looking for a versatile statement piece that will take you from day to night? Coperni’s cylindrical shape will add an artistic touch to tonal tailoring.

The day clutch

Right now, there is nothing chicer than a day clutch to keep your look on trend. Look for pieces in luxe leather, such as those by Bottega Veneta. Black and cream are, of course, a fail-safe option, while statement shades such as blue and orange will invigorate your outfit – particularly when worn with daytime denim. Loewe’s Flamenco clutch, with its instantly recognizable knotted fastening, Khaite’s croissant-shaped bag and Givenchy’s sculptural ID93 are also the perfect home for your everyday essentials. Plus, their clutch credentials mean they tick off day and night dress codes, making them a very wise investment.

Jewelry

The final and possibly easiest way to inject individuality into your outfit is by adding jewelry, and right now it’s all about statement bracelets that lend detail to minimal looks while also complementing prints, patterns and textures. Wear stackable pieces with tiered layers such as those by Isabel Marant, or for a runway-ready alternative, seek out pieces with curvaceous silhouettes, such as Bottega Veneta’s two-tone bracelet that snakes up the arm or Valentino’s gold cuff with intricate chain detailing. Wear them to elevate a casual ensemble.
