The Trend Report: New Denim

Stylist and creative director PERNILLE TEISBAEK shows us how to wear the season’s hottest denim shapes and shades

White denim feels very luxe and looks so beautiful. It’s not very practical during the day if you have small kids at home – it would last five minutes – but I love to wear it when I’m going out or to work, especially after a vacation when I have more tanned skin. These loose-fitting jeans are really flattering; I always think about balancing proportions when I style myself and with carrot-shaped pants you need to wear something tighter on top – you can always throw a light layer like a trench over it too. You could style them with stilettos, but they look so great and a little bit ’80s tucked into boots for a cool summer evening. And there’s something really amazing about mixing tones and textures of the same shade from head to toe – it works with all colors, but with white it feels so rich.”

If you’re wearing all white, add an eye-catching element like a snake-print coat or accessory

’90s DENIM

“Balance is everything with the ’90s trend, so I prefer to wear it in small portions rather than a full look. Mixing it with classic shapes and less-obvious pieces is a great way to elevate it and make it feel modern. I love tie-dye; it’s so fun and cool when you style it right. Stick to one element like a T-shirt or a great bag or pair of shoes – you don’t need to go overboard with it. And rather than wear sneakers, which could feel too literal, I’d add some elegant sandals that would really contrast with it.”

“Doubling up has a Western feel to it that’s fun, plus it’s comfortable and practical, which are the key words in my wardrobe. I prefer to wear the same tones together, but you can mix them up – this shirt would look great with black jeans instead of blue. I’m always drawn towards masculine and oversized shapes. If I’m wearing something casual like this then I’ll be sure to make it more interesting and feminine by wearing a pair of sandals with a very thin heel. It elevates the look and brings it from day to night, too.”

Textural accessories like a mock-croc bag will break up your head-to-toe denim look

“I really like denim shorts, mostly because they’re more practical than a skirt for summer if I’m playing with my kids or biking around the city. When they’re longer and hit above or just below your knee, they feel more covered up and appropriate to wear during the day or in the office. I like to make them feel smarter by putting them together with something a bit more masculine like a blazer – it feels like a modern take on the suit and a summery way to wear my jeans-plus-blazer uniform. Style with a pair of open-toe sandals that will really elongate your legs.”

Avoid wearing socks with shorts of this length – they’ll cut across your ankles and make your legs look shorter

“The great thing about denim is that it’s so easy to elevate for a night out. I do wear jeans in the evening, but a denim skirt brings out a more feminine side. I like a shape that’s straight and slim-fit rather than A-line. I’d pair it with something super-ladylike like an elegant jacket. What really tops it off, though, is to wear sparkling accessories, especially sandals like these that give you long, sexy legs and shimmer when you walk.”

Like a piece of jewelry, a headband can quickly elevate your look. This shape so chic and I love that it makes you look a bit royal
