Dr Barbara Sturm’s rules for great skin

Daily SPF? Check. Double cleanse? Check. Retinol and vitamin C? Check. You already have the essentials in place, so what can you do now to take your skin from good to great? NEWBY HANDS asks one of her favorite skin doctors, Dr. Barbara Sturm, for advice on how to A-game your skin

Be gentle

“Inflammation causes damage, sensitivity, rosacea, breakouts and, ultimately, wrinkles and aging. So don’t use anything or do anything to your skin that causes redness or irritation, because that is creating inflammation. It can be triggered by ingredients like mineral oil, acid peels or the new trend for face vinegars, or it can come from treatments such as lasers and micro-needling. I like micro-needling, but done once a month in a clinic, not every night in your bathroom. Redness is a sign of inflammation, which ultimately disrupts tissue and breaks down collagen, so you need to stop inflammation, especially by avoiding anything that triggers redness in your skin.”

  • Calming Serum, 10ml
  • Resist Skin Restoring Moisturizer SPF50, 60ml
  • Calming Mask, 50g
  • Skinesis Comfort Cream D-Stress, 30ml

Take a supplement

“Our lives today are crazy, and everything gets so stressful. Plus we have pollution, ozone and sun exposure, and we’re traveling more. These are some of the worst things for our skin. It’s difficult to ensure that we get exactly what we need to counter these aggressors from our food, but a good supplement will have been formulated with ingredients such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and adaptogens that help protect against external and internal stresses.”

  • Repair Food (60 capsules)
  • Monthly Refill (120 capsules)
  • Beauty in a Bottle (60 capsules)

Don’t use acids

“I’m not a fan. I like a scrub once or twice a week, but acids can be too aggressive. We need to be gentle on our skin. I see so many girls and women using peels too often. It ruins your skin barrier, which is so important for keeping the skin healthy.”

  • Exfoliating Almond Face Scrub, 50ml
  • BRB Multipolish, 100ml
  • The Radiance Microdermabrasion Glow Treatment, 50ml
  • Soft Clay Rubber Exfoliant and Mask, 60ml

Do use red light

“I like to use red LED light treatments to calm the skin and boost collagen. It’s been scientifically proven to work, and I particularly recommend it for soothing inflammation.”

  • Trinity Wrinkle Reducer Attachment
  • DRx SpectraLite EyeCare Pro

Get a good night’s sleep

“When you sleep well, it makes such a difference. But our lifestyles these days make it increasingly difficult, with so much flying and too much stress. So try to find things that help you relax and give you a better quality of sleep.”

  • Sleep Series - Anchor, 10ml
  • Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil, 55ml
  • ZZZZs Supplement (30 capsules)
  • Dream Dust, 42.5g

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

“Dehydration is a big issue for everyone today – a good hydration mask is a miracle for me. As we age, we have less hyaluronic acid in our skin, and we need to replace it with HA-based skincare. HA has no history of causing problems; it’s used everywhere and people love it and what it can do for their skin. Also, very dry skin is more susceptible to damage from UV and HEV light, so you need to keep your skin hydrated and the barrier strong.”

  • Hyaluronic Ampoules, 7 x 2ml
  • Hyaluron Serum, 30ml
  • Blue Light Protection Hyaluronic Serum, 30ml
  • Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder

Do a handstand – yes, really

“It’s a quick way to re-energize your skin, mind and body. I do this in the morning or when I’m feeling tired but have to go out, because it gets the blood going and makes your skin glow.”
