Why MCQ’s New Avant-Garde Collections Are Wearable Artworks
A buzzy design collective famed for its directional designs, MCQ’s latest offerings don’t disappoint. Cue gallery-worthy watercolor florals, plus anatomy-inspired prints the people – and planet – will love
As a sister brand to the legendary British fashion house Alexander McQueen, MCQ was always destined to be extraordinary. Since launching in 2020, the label has worked with an everchanging roster of collaborators instead of appointing a single creative director – and this global troupe of up-and-coming artists and creatives, including singer and style icon Rina Sawayama, ensures the design collective is constantly evolving. Drawing on cerebral and topical references, while striving for an eco-friendly existence, it is truly a fashion label of the future.
For one of its latest collections (or ‘icons’), titled ‘Striae’ (meaning stretch marks, or a linear ridge), MCQ teamed up with illustrator Taylor Silk to put the things that are typically concealed by our clothes at the forefront. Lingerie, scars, and skin conditions inform prints, while heatmap-inspired fabrics conjure the internal anatomy. One captivating stretch-mesh midi dress comes in a surreal print with a contrasting seam that frames the body and makes a fitting detail for the corporeal theme. Toughen it up with stompy boots or, for a more elegant look, style it with pointed stilettos and a sleek shoulder bag.

Another of the label’s latest outings is the ‘Grow Up’ capsule, which shines a spotlight on considered design techniques and the make-do-and-mend ethos. Inspired by the beauty of horticulture, the collection champions dreamlike flowers, subverting the notion that florals are an entirely prim print. Think dappled, hazy blooms adorning a silk shirt and matching wide-leg pants cleverly created by hammering fresh flowers onto the fabric to produce a pretty watercolor effect – true works of art that, crucially, also utilize planet-friendly dyes. Style them together for an impactful look or wear them separately with denim, slip skirts, and silk camis in complementary creamy tones. The ‘Grow Up’ icon also includes a ribbed-knit, rust-colored floral midi, which can be worn with or without the detachable turtleneck to deliver two looks in one. Pair it with a statement tote and sneakers or leather sandals for a contemporary spin on city or vacation staples.
