Barbour is putting a fashion-forward twist on classic British heritage with its exciting new ALEXACHUNG collection…
What do James Bond, the Royal Family and Glastonbury revelers have in common? They all have an appreciation for a Barbour coat. Originally launched in 1894 to provide protective outerwear to fishermen, sailors and mariners from inclement weather conditions, today the British-born heritage label’s continued cachet comes down to its ability to appeal to both urban tastemakers and rural dwellers alike with its practical and hard-wearing reputation, coupled with an innate and timeless cool.
For SS20, the label’s evolution has picked up the pace, as it once again collaborates with ALEXACHUNG – the quirky and cool, eponymous brainchild of perennially chic TV presenter and model Alexa Chung. Both synonymous with British style, Barbour and Chung’s collaborative collection reimagines key styles from the fall capsule, while also introducing all-new, highly covetable designs.
“While the first collection explored how we initially interpret Barbour through the ALEXACHUNG lens, the SS20 collection has enabled us to express ourselves a little more fully within the framework of the Barbour world,” explains Chung. “We've cropped jackets, developed new fabrications and colors and played with outerwear interiors as exteriors.”
The collection also reinterprets some of Barbour’s archival pieces, such as the sand-hued Edith and the Bordeaux, black and olive color-blocked Patch style, which are both inspired by the classic Barbour Beaufort. The rich rural heritage of the Beaufort is instantly recognizable by the traditional corduroy collar and ultra-practical oversized pockets of the Edith, while the Patch’s dark color palette gives it an authentic sense of sentimentality.
“This super-versatile collection perfectly espouses the craftmanship of Barbour with Chung’s trend savvy and sense of humor

There is also the Coco, which is based on the rare Barbour Longshoreman smock. Crafted from a lightweight waxed cotton fabric, its pullover design nostalgically recalls the original Longshoreman, while its easy-wearing, slip-on silhouette makes it perfect for summer festivals and unpredictable weather conditions. The detachable hood, large kangaroo front pocket, Barbour patch pocket detailing and zipped side-seams mean it is as functional as it is fashionable.
If you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated to see you through the working week and beyond, consider the navy Mildred mackintosh-style coat. We love its elegant, long-line shape and customizable finishing touches, from the detachable corduroy collar to the optional waist belt in the iconic Barbour Tattersall check lining, which was first introduced in 1994. Wear it over precision ’90s-inflected tailoring for understated chic in the office.
And, finally, there is the sleek Agatha longline jacket, which comes with a waist-cinching belt to add structure, and a pretty gingham lining to lend a laid-back feel. Wear it with a cashmere knit and faded straight-leg jeans to add a polish to your off-duty style.
This super-versatile collection perfectly espouses the craftmanship of Barbour with Chung’s trend savvy and sense of humor: “This collection marries British heritage with contemporary living – classic, durable, irreverent but respectful,” says Chung. “We are looking back but moving forward. Not literally, though, as you would probably fall over!”
