Forever Chloé
Chloé’s ultra-cool FW19 collection is a lesson in understated ’70s style
Since joining Chloé in 2017, Creative Director Natacha Ramsay-Levi has firmly established her own house signature, taking the spirit of the Parisian maison – all carefree bohemia and ethereal charm – and injecting a cool edge into it. From off-duty rock stars to office girls and folk-minded bohemians, she looked at all walks of ’70s life for FW19, resulting in an ultra-wearable collection that caters to every aspect of a modern woman’s wardrobe.
What are the key pieces and details to look for? This fall sees fresh updates on often-overlooked closet classics, as checked pencil skirts, mutton-sleeve blouses and printed sweaters are reimagined as ultra-cool new-season heroes. Utilitarian style tropes such as mariner’s coats and capes add edges of elegance and refinement, while rock’n’roll favorites – including a standout sheepskin coat, worn by model-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber on the runway – ensure the collection never feels too polished or stiff. These truly are pieces that could go straight from the runway to real life with absolute ease.
Loyalists of the label will be pleased to know that Chloé’s emblematic design codes are as strong as ever. Silhouettes are loose and free while maintaining elements of structure that flatter the body: billowing blouses feature ribbed knitted cuffs, and loose printed mini dresses are ruched at the waist to define the relaxed shape. In keeping with the retro mood, a luxuriously warm palette of beige, brown and caramel is broken up with moments of cornflower blue and dusty pink, adding elements of romance and bohemia.
Of course, no Chloé collection would be complete without a future ‘It’ bag to finish your look. This season’s Aby tote is set to be a new-season hero, guaranteed to be seen on the arm of every street-style star worth their salt. From mock-croc to lizard print, the petite top-handle piece perfectly encapsulates ’70s glamour with its gold hardware and house logo. A luxurious ode to Chloé girls everywhere.
