Gabriela Hearst did something truly revolutionary when she debuted her SS20 collection at New York Fashion Week, staging the first ever carbon-neutral fashion show. Asked what inspired this innovative feat, the designer – known for her impeccable eco-credentials – spoke candidly, stating that, before this conscious approach could become industry standard, someone had to show that it could actually be done. And while the designer’s cutting-edge vision was certainly a topic of conversation, the clothes were just as compelling. Hearst found the sweet spot between elegance and ease, with timeless pieces that promise to elevate any closet. Case in point: a linen shirt dress cast in an ochre hue and complete with ruched pockets. From the gently cinched waist to the mid-length cut, this flattering piece is a fail-safe addition to your summer uniform, something that’s of particular importance to the PORTER fashion team making the most of the sunshine in London this week.
In fact, the fine weather has inspired senior fashion features editor Gillian Brett to give her look a seasonal overhaul. An ardent fan of black, after seeing Isabel Marant’s ethereal SS20 show at Paris Fashion Week – and catching up with the legendary designer in February – she’s stepping into the light.
“‘I was feeling a lot of color, something very bright, very happy,’ Isabel Marant told me of her SS20 collection, and that is exactly what I need right now. So I’ll be styling the brand’s gorgeous lightweight white floral crocheted top and slouchy pants with piles of its boldly colored beaded bracelets and statement feathered earrings. We’re currently experiencing a heatwave in London, so The Row’s round-frame tortoiseshell sunnies, a basket bag and some flat leather sandals will complete my summer-in-the-city look.”
If you’re after a similar dose of sartorial serotonin, accessories are a sure-fire way to elevate your look, and mood. Rejina Pyo’s barely-there sandals don’t just nod to one of this season’s biggest trends, the wavy heel will also add a playful feel to everything from summer dresses to blue jeans. Alternatively, Suzanne Kalan’s contemporary take on a classic diamond ring or Bottega Veneta’s two-toned hoop earrings, delicately crafted from tiger’s eye – a stone said to bring its wearer success via increased confidence, courage and determination – would make a welcome addition to any jewelry box.
