The PORTER team may not have made it to Milan fashion week this season, but current travel restrictions have done nothing to diminish our appreciation of, or appetite for, Italian design. ‘Made in Italy’ has long been considered the sartorial gold standard, and fall/winter ’20 is no exception. With faultless quality, sumptuous materials and needle-pushing pieces being the calling card of local labels, it should come as no surprise to learn that many of the team’s new-season wish lists read like a who’s who of home-grown houses.
Since 2015, when Alessandro Michele took the helm at Italian institution Gucci – which will celebrate its centenary next year – the label has pioneered an eclectic new look that has had the industry in raptures from day one. This season’s suede-trimmed camel cardigan epitomizes Michele’s timely yet timeless aesthetic; plus, it makes a failsafe addition to any off-duty closet. Pair yours with classic denim and penny loafers for an effortless weekend look. Elsewhere, heritage brand Bottega Veneta has become a cult favorite under the masterful direction of British-born designer Daniel Lee. Fashion insiders are particularly enamored with the playful accessories, which sees Lee put a modern twist on the label’s signature intrecciato leathers. Pop one of the brand’s grab bags in the crook of your arm to instantly elevate any outfit.
For shopping assistant Viktorija Tomasevic, London’s increasingly autumnal weather is the perfect excuse to invest in a classic coat – and Loro Piana’s cashmere trench is the ultimate forever piece. “Fall is finally here, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Trans-seasonal dressing can be tricky, but the key to mastering it is to build a capsule closet of luxurious staples like cashmere sweaters, butter-soft leather boots and, of course, timeless coats. When it comes to shopping, I’m a firm believer in buying less but buying better, which is why I’ll be purchasing Loro Piana’s camel robe coat this season. I plan to layer it over everything from slip dresses and midi skirts to oversized tailoring; I know I’ll wear and cherish this trophy piece for years to come.”
