The Fall/Winter 2026 Trends And How To Wear Them Now
From gothic glamour to lessons in layering – plus a whole new color palette to play with – fall/winter ’26 saw newness come in all forms as a host of creative directors unveiled their debut collections, says GILLIAN BRETT. Discover the key runway looks to know for next season – and how to recreate them now…
“The overarching mood across fashion month for fall/winter ’26 felt polished and expressive, while also making a shift away from the more extreme trends that we’ve seen in previous seasons, towards a more wearable aesthetic,” says Brigitte Chartrand, NET-A-PORTER’s chief buying and merchandising officer. “Slim tailoring and structured silhouettes dominated the runways, balanced by luxurious textures such as velvet, charmeuse, shearling and head-to-toe leather. Color also became more expressive, with chartreuse, deep red and rich purple appearing throughout collections. As expected, statement outerwear was key and we saw lots of nods to the ’80s, with many brands referencing their archive.” Read on for more…
Mood: Gothic romance
A darkly romantic, gothic glamour began in London with Erdem (who celebrated his 20th anniversary) and Simone Rocha, becoming the thread that stitched the season together. Picture Margot Robbie’s Cathy Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights on a night out in 2026 and you’ll get the mood. In fact, many fashion editors at Simone Rocha’s show lamented that the Irish designer hadn’t been the one to create the costumes for Emerald Fennell’s ultra-stylised revival of the literary classic. Rocha’s gorgeous fall offering was as whimsical and romantic as we’ve come to expect – this time with a side serving of athleisure courtesy of an Adidas Originals collaboration. In Milan, Demna’s Gucci debut signaled his intentions to take the house back to its sensual, Tom Ford-era glory with second-skin silhouettes in an inky palette, filtered through his signature subversive lens. While in Paris, Saint Laurent and Tom Ford co-signed on this trend with latex, lace and evening dresses styled with vampy collars.

Key colors: purple, bottle green, ochre and red
Each season brings fresh color focuses and for fall, the palette has evolved from spring’s poppy primary colors to sophisticated bottle green, ochre, scarlet and purple. Colors that help paint the story of the gothic, romantic and nostalgic mood that played out on the runways, as well as pairing perfectly with all the lace, velvet, leather and rich brocades. Whether worn head-to-toe for maximum drama or used as just a styling accent to enliven neutral pieces, they make a compelling case for weaving more color into your wardrobe.

Key piece: the minimalist dress
The first episode of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette dropped the night before the Calvin Klein Collection show; thus, attendees were eager to see whether the collection would lean into the hype surrounding Carolyn’s highly coveted closet, bursting with Calvin Klein designs from the ’90s. While creative director Veronica Leoni took things in a slightly different direction – instead, exploring the brand’s late ’70s, early ’80s aesthetic – there were moments that were pure CBK-coded minimalism, including the exquisite white maxi dress with a sporty neckline – and the appearance of Grace Gummer, who plays JFK’s sister Caroline, on the front row. Meanwhile, at Demna’s first Gucci outing and Pieter Mülier’s final Alaïa show, both designers presented a strikingly simple midi dress with a tank neckline that is set be the cool-girl go-to for eveningwear come fall.

Boots as pants
Fall’s over-the-knee boots are so long they could be mistaken for pants, with Givenchy most convincingly tricking the eye. This season, many designers moved away from oversized silhouettes – with The New York Times’ chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman simply stating “oversize is over” – and ultra-tall, ultra-narrow boots are the perfect pairing for streamlined silhouettes. On the runways, they came in soft suede to nail the folk revival and smooth leather to complete sleek evening looks.

The styling trick: layers upon layers
While Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons gave the most seamless lesson in layering with their Russian doll-esque Prada show – where models took multiple turns on the runway, peeling off a layer each time – Missoni, Rabanne, Bottega Veneta and Marni also proved that sometimes you don’t need to ‘look in the mirror and take one thing off before leaving the house’ (as per Coco Chanel’s famous advice). At Missoni, Alberto Caliri liberally piled on coats, bombers, cardigans and blazers, with scarves and shawls as the cherry on the cake. At her Marni debut, Meryll Rogge gave a masterclass in artfully mixing color, pattern and texture. Julien Dossena made sure the Rabanne woman isn’t getting caught short in the cold – the brand’s polo knits, blouses, camisoles, tea dresses, shearling bombers and colored hosiery all worn at once will ensure she’ll look chic and cozy come fall. Get ready to level up your layering next season.

Haute hosiery
Hosiery got an upgrade for fall. No longer an afterthought, designers made multicolored versions the focal point of their looks – from bright white to bold orange. Socks received a similar glow-up. Marni’s Meryll Rogge added a playful twist to her collection by pairing colorful socks with Mary Janes and lace-up kitten heels in a move that chimes perfectly with the brand’s artsy aesthetic. At Dolce&Gabanna, meanwhile, mid-calf, semi-sheer pop socks were also deployed as an unexpected finishing touch. Here, they came in all-black, adding texture and sensuality to the collection and serving to elongate the silhouettes. It’s a clear evolution from the bright wool socks the fashion set are currently loving – so clear some space in your sock drawer for haute pantyhose, too.

Folk tales
Where does boho go from here? Following the look’s dominance in recent seasons, Chloé fans have been eager to see where Chemena Kamali will take the brand next. With Kate Bush in the ’70s and Dutch folk costume on her moodboard, Kamali conjured beautiful skirts in tiered mousseline or quilted florals, billowing dresses in checks and primary colors, and sweet hand-knitted sweaters. The capes will be the coat everyone is after come fall – styled with the over-the-knee Western boots. Tap into the folk look this spring in Jil Sander’s pretty checked cotton-poplin midi dress.

The texture: velvet
Margot Robbie’s epic, promotional ‘tourdrobe’ for Wuthering Heights featured everything from an archival black leather mini by Vivienne Westwood to a corseted red velvet Chanel gown, both of which play sartorial homage to her big-screen character, Catherine ‘Cathy’ Earnshaw. The influence was clear as plush velvet kept popping up on the fall/winter ’26 runways – and while Robbie’s Cathy is decked out on the moors in extravagant silhouettes, designers opted for a sleeker, more city-appropriate take. Figure-skimming, strapless velvet dresses were seen at Colleen Allen, while Calvin Klein Collection, Ralph Lauren Collection, Khaite and Alaïa all opted for top-to-toe tailored leather looks.

The finishing touch: long gloves
This fall, gloves need to be at least elbow length – bonus points for bicep height. At Max Mara, all 45 looks were styled with long suede gloves, while at Sportmax, Balenciaga, Ralph Lauren and Khaite, extravagant gloves served as a key finishing touch to many looks. It’s an accessory that has already been spotted on the streets between shows as tastemakers gave elegant elbow-length gloves a spring-appropriate twist, wearing them with short-sleeve shirts in a simple but sophisticated styling trick.
