A string of ‘serious’ actresses and exciting emerging talents are appearing in big-screen comedies this year, making the category more compelling than ever. There’s plenty in the offing when it comes to comedy helmed by women. Expected in cinemas this summer is the adaptation of Maria Semple’s witty novel, Where’d You Go, Bernadette. Promising sharp commentary on the wonders, strains and absurdities of modern life, Cate Blanchett plays anxious genius and mother Bernadette alongside Bridesmaid’s Kristen Wiig.

Next, Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar for her screenwriting skills on 2007’s Juno, has written a brilliantly frank comedy about modern motherhood. Tully (due out in May), stars her repeat collaborator Charlize Theron as a relatable (read: exhausted) mother-of-three who’s gifted a night nanny by her concerned brother.

Also in the pipeline is thrilling comedy caper Ocean’s 8, hitting cinemas in June with its mind-bogglingly brilliant female cast – Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Anne Hathaway, and Sarah Paulson – a crew bound to provoke laughs and air-punches galore.

What’s more, filming of the second season of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is underway – a show carried by revelatory House of Cards alumna Rachel Brosnahan, which puts the spotlight on the world of ’50s stand-up and is hilarious at every turn.
