Flip flops, or thong sandals, have become every fashion girl’s favorite way to finish an outfit this summer. Here, we round up the season’s hottest styles and how to wear them now

Consider this your cue to book a pedicure, because you’ll be wearing flip flops a lot this summer, but these are no ordinary thong sandals. Spotted on the feet of countless showgoers across fashion month (and everywhere else since), the new insider styles of choice are contemporary, elevated and ultra-chic.

The beauty of a flip flop is that it truly goes with everything. This season’s crop of fashion flip flops can be used to add instant polish or off-duty cool to an outfit, depending on the style you choose and where you are heading. While their most obvious pairing is with shorts, Capri pants and summer dresses on vacation, fashion girls are wearing them with tailoring, balloon pants and lingerie-style slips in the city, too, maximizing their wearability in warm-weather dressing.

If you are heading to the beach sometime soon, it’s the perfect opportunity to incorporate another of this summer’s key trends: jelly sandals. Upgrade your usual slides with a pair of jelly thongs by Ancient Greek Sandals or Christopher Esber – the latter’s ‘Jo’ flip flops come in several colors, including this trending cobalt-blue and mint-green combo. Slip them on post-swim for trips to the bar with a bikini and denim shorts, then again when you fly home with an oversized shirt and drawstring pants. Christian Louboutin’s ‘Miss Z’ pair, meanwhile, have a slight heel that makes them elevated enough to wear to dressier events with everything from breezy kaftans to slinky slip dresses.
