Hardwearing yet lightweight and sustainable, linen has long been a staple fabric for the summer months, but, more often than not, it’s found in the form of shapeless smocks and oversized shorts. However, for spring/summer ’21, a handful of agenda-setting designers debuted luxe linen dresses that swiftly made it on to our wish lists – their ease and maximum wearability feel right as we re-emerge into more sociable situations.
Mara Hoffman played with proportions that alluded to the classic fabric’s bohemian connotations by creating a truly directional off-white dress – the prairie-style sweetheart neckline was offset by sculptural sleeves that felt distinctly modern. Faithfull The Brand took this one step further, with a sweet, short number that would look as at home by the sea as in the city. Whatever style you’re drawn to, pair it with lace-up espadrilles and gold-tone jewelry for a chic take on off-duty dressing. And, as the season takes hold, if you have a calendar of incoming weddings or garden parties to look forward to, barely-there sandals and statement earrings are all you need for an insouciant after-dark look.
If it’s something more understated you’re after, Vince’s drapey dress in an earthy hue is a polished iteration. The gently capped sleeves feel distinctly Grecian, while the column silhouette and midi-length make it appropriate for daytime, too. While this elegant dress is sure to add a sense of ceremony – even if it’s teamed with Birkenstocks – it will also be a no-brainer when it comes to choosing a dress to wear for dinner dates by candlelight.
